Hello people, I was wondering if you could help me out? I have bought a new ipad which is supposed to work on 4g when not connected to wireless. How do I do this? A brand new sim card came with my ipad ( a 3 one) do I have to activate the sim card or something? Thanks for ant response.

You can't, the iPad's 4G only works in the US and Canada. No-one offers 4G here yet and even when they do it almost certainly won't use the same standards.

Thaks. So am I right in saying now that if I want to go online ect away from my wifi that I have to activate the 3micro sim card? Then pay £7.50/month for 1gb data allowance?

Not sure how it operates but I believe O2 is supposed to be trailing 4g in london.

as for your question, yes you need to get yourself a data enabled 3g micro-sim.

Apple have got in to some hot water over the 4g issue. Been accused of misleading customers.

AFAIK, there's a sticker on the iPad box stating that it won't work on any 4G network apart from AT&T in the US. It's also on the Apple website but in small print. IMO, it would have made sense to market it as 4G in the US where it can be used and 3G everywhere else until the iPad 4 next year when no doubt worldwide 4G chips will be avialble. Bear in mind if Everything Everywhere get the go ahead to launch 4G later this year, the new iPad won't work on the network because it uses different frequencies to what EE and the other operators will (eventually) get.

Apple are doing relabelling now.

Its still a bit misleading though with "connecting with fast mobile networks around the world" what it hints at.

£50 per month when it arrives in the UK?

The closest thing you can get to 4G is HSPA+ from Three, to get that you don't need anything special except a device that supports the technology like the new iPad.

Is it 4G? no, T-mobile in the US market it as that, but it isn't proper 4G LTE.

The Three network are upgrading to HSPA+ 42Mbps though, so over the rest of this year you should see speeds really increase, giving you about 10Mbps+ by the end of the year in most areas with HSPA+.

However for 4G LTE you'll have to wait, as the iPad cannot be used for 4G LTE in the UK even when it's released from about 18 months time.

Neither will the iPad work with Orange's LTE that they hope to release later in the year as the iPad doesn't support LTE at 1800Mhz, the only thing that will be supported by Orange at that time is likely to be custom dongles sold by them only.
