Getting iPad dimemma
thedrewser
03-04-2012
It's my 40th birthday next month and according to the missus I'm finally going to get an iPad. However, we were having a discussion last night and I need to choose between:-

(a) waking up on my birthday to a wrapped box with my ipad in it for me to open straight away; or
(b) wake up on my birthday, get dressed, on the train and go to the Apple shop to buy the iPad myself.

I can't decide which is the more satisfying. Ever so slightly leaning towards having a nice shiny box given to me to open.

I would have to say waiting for the knock on the door and taking it out of the box is the best buzz ever. I don't think going to the shop would have the same effect, but that's just me....Happy 40th btw!

spending money is fun. But if it were any other gift would you prefer to have it ready and waiting or have to lug down to the shop for it?

As someone of a similar age who's birthday is this weekend.

Breakfast in bed followed by presents.

Got mine on Xmas day all bright and shiny in its box from my dear wife. Great fun to tootle around with on the day, but it only made real sense when I attended the Apple store training day and spoke to the staff there.

It may take all the romance out of the situation, but I would go for the trip down to the store - it is well worth it.

on your 40th birthday do you really want some snotty youngster high-fiving you as you walk into an Apple shop ??

I think I'm leaning towards having the present when I wake up. Gives you extra "playtime" with it.

And, the day after is the last day of the Premier League, so may be using it to its max to get full coverage (plus SkyGo for the big golf tournament on that weekend as I have visitors that weekend so can't hog the tv).

Can't wait. And the wife is fully briefed on what my preferred model is.

It might also be a good idea to ask your wife to sneakily, behind your back and without your knowledge charge it fully and then put it back in the box so that you will be pleasantly surprised and free to lie in bed until it is time to get up at the crack of lunch.
I was awakened by an excited young salesman from my local computer shop on the first day of sales 'phoning to tell me mine was available for pick-up. He wasn't willing to deliver, so I had to get out of bed and collect it, which left me open to high-pressure sales techniques forcing me to buy accessories, which I really did need, honestly.
Enjoy your new toy, your birthday, and if you're into F1, let me recommend the Soft Pauer F1 Timing App, it's like absolutely awesome, literally dude!

N.B. Apple recommend fully charging before first use; mine came with an 80% charge but I have read of some came out of the box at 60%

I have 2 very young children who wake up at the crack of dawn and my 4 y.o daughter loves birthdays so I expect it'll be some hours before I would be able actually sit down and play with, by which time it should be fully charged.

If you trek down to the Apple store to buy it, it might be an idea to phone up beforehand to check if they've got it in stock.

The Apple Store in Covent Garden, London STILL has the wi-fi only 32gb model out of stock despite the long queues there. It's the same story in John Lewis and the other Apple Store in Regent street.

I didn't realise there were any stock problems. The store I'd go to would be one of the Glasgow ones (depending if I wanted to drive or train).

I'm getting the ipad 2 for my birthday.

However, I'm getting it as an early present because comet are doing a deal this easter holidays at £329 and my dad wants to cash in on it with his comet card! Woop woop.

You're male so surely you've heard that little voice in your head saying, "Avoid shops. Avoid shops."

The important question is 'which' iPad are you going to get!

It's £329 everywhere. Apple lowered the price after the introduction of the new version.
