There will still be news programmes on BBC One inc regional news. The broadcasts will likely be carried on transponder capacity not currently in use for anything else. The only question re Sky is whether they have enough SD memory capacity for their older boxes to cope with an extra 24 SD listings on the epg - if so then no existing channels need to be displaced. If they need to reduce existing SD channels for the duration then Sky Box Office channels are the obvious target.

Many Sky subscribers don't have +HD or + boxes.

As well as all of these HD and SD channels, 12 hours of 3D coverage is being shown on Sky 3D every day, courtesy of Eurosport. For the duration, the 3D channel will be made available to any Sky customer with the HD pack - (no need for sport + movies)

This is fantastic news. Good on the BBC for doing this. Not enough coverage is given to the minor sports. This will give viewers the chance to stay with a sport that they are really interested in.

Sky will NOT drop SKY Movies (a service - for which they have paying customers) in order to free up room to have some fta channels showing archery, fencing and judo.......I can hear the cries for refunds already.

Whilst it makes a nice headline - 24 Olympic feeds is (like pretty much all the BBC Olympic coverage) overkill. The main events shown on the "main" channels are the only ones that will get more than a handful of viewers.

I may be wrong, but will other Countries broadcasters have access to these feeds enabling them to follow their athletes in all events no matter how obsure ?

If so its a great advert for British broadcasting.

I read that Sky Italia are providing a 12 screen service, I suspect we may be alone or at least in the minority providing 24 screens which is understandable as hosts.

I am not a huge Olympics fan but it's great coverage though

TBH, apart from the Opening & Closing Ceremonies, and a few athletics events, I shall be making use of my PVR's and SKY/Freeview non Olympics channels.

I suspect the Internet will slow to a crawl.

With streaming ( UK & International ) and BBC iPlayer downloads.

No events overnight though AFAIK.

I said Sky Movies Screens. You know the "screens" used for PPV Box Office Movies, not the main Sky Movie channels, there is a difference. Something has to be temporarily cut for them to launch the Olympic SD channels on the EPG for customers who lack Sky HD boxes. It is possible that can be scaled back but not axed all together without impacting the Sky Movies subscribers.

This is why the SD launch queue was closed, the SD boxes (well the old ones) are at memory capacity.

The key word there is "could" and I'm sceptical it would actually lead to that.
