I agree that she has some things to learn regarding stagecraft and admits this herself. I don't agree with the boring tag though. I base this on my attendance at her Glasgow concert where her audience were very far from bored and seemed to connect with her shy chatter combined with the soulful vocals. She received a great reception in Glasgow as I believe Matt did as well.

Crabbie, was your opinion based on seeing her on TV as opposed to a live concert? Her live concert performances are completely different to her TV performances.

Anyway, no offence taken and it's good to discuss these things in a positive manner.

By the way guys I am off to Canada tomorrow for 3 months. I will be in Saskatchewan, which is the home province of Joni Mitchell which leads me on to say that my favourite Matt cover is River.

Thanks for your forbearance with a lonely Rebecca fan. ”

Hi manderley waves.................Matt and Rebecca have their own singing styles and good for them at least they have one. Have a happy holiday manderley Ohhhhh Joni Mitchel wooowhooo.

I would like to discuss them in a "safe" environment, without the nastiness some posters on MF seem apt to express.

1) That Matt is a good vocalist (I'm afraid some people won't admit to more than good ) but that his own songwriting isn't strong enough. They back this up by saying that his most successful songs have been those written by others, and that the best feedback from the tour has been for FT - again not his song.

Well, OF COURSE his winners single was very successful - that's what happens when you win XF. His own acoustic version is far superior - *gnashes teeth* hard to explain these things to closed ears. RFYL - so many reasons NOT to have done this, and here's another gem - it got in the way of Matt's own songs being released, pushed them down the pecking order, and now makes them look unsuccessful when the album had sold plenty before Starlight/Amazing were released. FT was always in Matt's portfolio before the show - but it's a shame that is somehow used against him.

Anyway, it's left me feeling slightly guilty of tweeting so much and asking for Uninvited. It's just it is the epitome of how I would love people to see Matt - a non soppy song that highlights his incredible vocals and has a bit of "rock goddery" chucked in. The way forward is to stick with his own material as much as possible, and *no pressure* but to write his own Uninvited.

2) That the mix of songs on Letters was cheesy and generic (could this be what the XF influences wanted?). Personally I think they were trying to go for a bit of a theme with their track choices on the album. He was clearly in a very romantically reflective mood last summer, having found personal happiness, and this was evident in the feel of many of the songs. Unfortunately, I think choosing Amazing as the last single might have reinforced this view (sorry ), but it did seem to tie in with the Valentines theme of the EP. I think he will have moved on from this now - I think there's something a bit more ballsy in there.

3) That he's boring compared to his XF image, which was a bit more edgy, and he keeps saying than you too much.

Personally I hated all that cr*p written about him being a womaniser. He's a nice guy, humble and grateful, with just the right sprinkling of naughtiness. I'm not actually sure there's much to criticise about that, but there you go - some have managed to!

I suppose I'm asking whether people think there's any validity in these views, or whether he will simply never satisfy those pre-disposed against him?”

Hi Cardie, Great post!

Sorry but again I dont have time to do a long post . So I am just going to highlight the points that I would like to comment on,
For me Matts voice is intoxicating, but I can perfectly understand that it could be a bit "marmite", I think that there were people who REALLY GOT his voice from the very begining , as we all did, but a lot who just didnt.

I have to admit that it rather upset me , all through the tour, that it was FT that had the standing ovations , and was picked out as the stand out performance by almost every reviewer.

As beautiful as it is , It never has been what Matt is all about. Im quite sure that when he was appearing with 7S, he would never have dreamed of performing this as part of his set!
It harks back to the X factor, and for that reason I hope he stops doing this now.
As for RFYL being used as his breaking single...... AARGGG!! It still infuriates me that the PTB threw such a spanner in the works with this, and I , For one , cant bear to see him perform it! Starlight was such an obvious choice! And as a few have said, would have been much more successful!
I think its fair to say that Matt is never going to sell singles well untill they are available in the physical, and can be picked up easily at the big supermarkets. I just dont think that a lot of Matts fans will be download people.

Cardie I completely agree with what you say about "Uninvited"!!

Im afraid that I do find most of the songs on "Letters" Cheesy and generic. I will also add old fashioned and "Mushy". Sorry but that is the way I feel. I was bitterly disappointed with it, A huge amount of this was down to the overproduction, but, even the lyrics and construction of most of the tracks fall far short of the standards he set with 7S. IMO. And Darwyn, especially WYW , even with Matts Rarara vocals has a boldness and ... I dont know, Strength of character that I think is really lacking on Letters.
Im putting this down to the fact that Letters was an album that had to appeal to all his x factor fans. 80% of which knew nothing of his previous work, and that is why it consists mainly of rather old fashioned ballads, with just a bit of rock thrown in to keep the rest of us interested. The choice of Accoustic and/or X factor songs on an extra CD was all part of this "trying to please everyone" I really feel that a lot of MATT has been lost in the process.

I agree re third emboldened!

I feel very happy that the "Letters" era is over, and I really, really hope he does what he says he wants to do with album no2! He just needs to trust his own musical instincts !!!

So much for saying I didnt have time for a long post!

Meeekatt,
Just to say, I was actually surprised that FT was included on the set list as it does hark backwards, but put it down to having been included on the Amazing EP and being personal to Matt. I must say, there was a Squee all around me at Hammersmith when he started - a lot of people really love hearing him sing it.
And also I've never felt that the songwriting on Darwyn got the credit it deserved.

1) that Matt is a good vocalist but not a good songwriter - I don't know the technicalities of this from a vocal experts point of view, but we already know he has a pretty impressive vocal range for a bloke, he can control his falsetto amazingly well flipping back and forth which I understand to be very difficult. However for me the proof is in his live performances and the fact that he has maintained the same quality across the whole tour - I was floored when I heard him in York at the clarity of his voice - and from all accounts it was just as strong at Hammersmith. All the reviews acknowledge - 'the boy can sing' - i think the criticism sometimes levelled at him comes from those who don't like his particular style of singing (ie singing like a girl!!) On a personal note I wish he wouldnt use his falsetto as much as he does - I got the feeling on X factor it was viewed as his 'thing' so they used it at every opportunity - for me its the tone of his voice which is appealing and the fact that it betrays his emotions so well - I far prefer the full bodied letting rip at the top end!! With regard to his songwriting abilities - really don't know on this one yet, there is undoubtably some talent there but it needs to be given the chance to be nurtured in the right environment so Matt can learn what needs to be done to change a good lyric or riff into the sound that he hears in his head if that makes sense. To write him off at this point as some of those MF poster are doing (grrr!) is quite frankly only an indication of their complete naivety about the whole song writing process- as Matt himself has said 'give me a f****ing chance!' They had to get the album out - it was delayed as it was - I really dont think he had the chance to do much more than he did with letters - (heres my conspiracy theory bit) - I really think he was forced to release RFYL as the lead single or at the very least didnt feel like he had any option - I think it was completely the wrong thing to do from Matts perspective and did so much damage feeding the journos (and MF posters)with the fodder they needed to continue the Xfactor flop line they had decided to follow. How they could fail to see Starlights lead single superiority over this is beyond me - if they were truly interested in promoting Matt as a singer-songwriter why would they NOT release this first??? - unless they were trying to maximise focus on some other act??? - I do wonder if this might be the reason for Will's split from Modest.
2)the mix of songs on letters was cheesy and generic - well yes it is a bit, but that doesn't detract from the fact that there are some cracking tunes in there - real growers which are for me only now starting to fulfill their potential when performed live - I really think they are now sounding more like the songs he thought he had written. I do wonder how many times he came back into the studio after thinking he'd laid down a cracking vocal only to find it sounding nothing like he intended after production? I remember listening to the preview tracks on itunes and being really excited - imagining how the track would build and the potential to go in all kinds of different directions only to be a bit disappointed in a couple of instances (BOABH - although i do love this -and PMU were cases in point for me - where did that twangy guitar line come from on PMU?? thank goodness it disappeared live). Having said that I think they had some tough decisions to make trying to keep the fans who only knew 'Xfactor Matt' but also wanting to hint at the artist he really is/ wants to be. Again I have my views about how far he was 'allowed' to go down this route and i'm so glad he has finally admitted that the whole thing was very 'frustrating' as it confirms to me that it is nowhere near as far as he wanted to go and TPTB had another focus other than maximising the potential talents of their winner (I still cannot get my head round the long term logic of this?? are they really going to make that much money out of 1D as opposed to a really successful TV programme which could last for years if it could really find and nurture true talent - maybe its easier having manufactured puppets! - have nothing against the boys BTW).
3)Boring image - now this one really makes me cross and sadly is a symptom of our internet / access all society. Why are we so focused on the image of what people pretend to be rather than who they really are??? And why infact should that matter if they produce wonderful music? Who makes these rules about how we should, look, sound, behave? and why are we so willing to follow??? 9 times out of 10 it involves some level of manipulation to get us to spend our hard earned cash simply to feel like we 'fit in' to the image we are all supposed to aspire to..............our press have so much to answer for and the sooner the law is changed to support the victims of misrepresentation the better -at the moment it seems that any rubbish can be printed and you just have to sit back and accept it or face huge legal bills trying to clear your name - so wrong...............sorry im off on one again ooopps and a bit of a mega post”

Another Great post Wildhoney!

I totally agree with everything highlighted.

Hi Cardie

FT recieved a fantastic reception at the Cardiff gig too. Standing ovation ,of course. I watched the faces of people sitting around us, and its clear that it still means a lot to his X factor fans. But he needs to be picking up new fans now, and for the right reasons. I just cant help feeling that its holding him back ... A bit

A couple of quid for a stocking filler is no shakes for a song that is very popular. Whatever bits of negativity I've seen on twitter about RFYL or Amazing, Starlight seems to get plenty of praise. Oh the pain!!!
Anyway I guess as long as lessons are learned for next time, that's all that matters. At the end of the day, Letters is still a platinum album.”

You said it sista I don't think I've seen one person, fan, non-fan or critic alike who didn't prefer Starlight to RFYL. Oh, for what could have been.

Regarding FT, I think out of all the X Factor performances he could have possibly done, this was the best one (along with Maybe Nights In White Satin), as it was a song that he had done before anyway and obviously means a lot to him. If he was doing Firework every night and receiving a standing ovation I'd be concerned.

I must admit I was not that bothered about him singing this..and I also stated that I thought that the loose women appearance would the "last time"..how wrong was i
But seeing it live it did provoke a reaction in the audience and in the air that Was really quite mind blowing...I know a lot of the reviews of the show have said it was standout but I think that's because it was there ...its such a well -known song I am sure other songs would have been given this status if he had not sang it..if that makes sense...all of the four acts from last year have sang covers because they only have one album..and if he had to sing a cover I am glad this was it
