US Kindle Fire in UK
Has any UK resident bought a US Kindle Fire and brought it back?
Does it work, especially if the Amazon Prime account and all else is registered in the UK? |

Answer to self, after a little more digging on other sites: apparently this will not work.
Amazon restricts purchase to US residents, and several of the connected services are unavailable outside the US. I guess there's a mountain of licensing issues to overcome, and a considerable price increase, before we see Fire in the UK. Oh well, was just a thought anyhow. |

I think you can put a different version of Android on, without all the Amazon stuff, and then access Android Market like with any Android device. I think if it ever updates to the latest Amazon version you lose it all, so you would have to avoid that, I'm not sure how easy that is. There's guides on how to do it on the Internet. I'm not sure if it would be worth the hassle or not.

I spend more time in the US than I want to, thank you. It's full of Americans.

I have one - Xmas present from my brother. It works fine as a bookreader (you can download anything from the UK Kindle store. The web app also works and (having tried it out on holiday) is much better than a lot of other devices at picking up weak wifi signals. But you can't download films, music, apps etc from the store, although you can transfer them from a PC or similar. In the few months I've had it there have been a steady stream of updates to the system software, so it is obviously being recognised and supported.
It's a handy bit of kit all the same, even if it is still limited. |
