Maybe I was wrong but I was under the impression Sony bought Panels from Samsung and also other internal components (such as the mainboard) were also produced by Samsung Semiconductor.

The panels were a joint Sony / Samsung venture called S LCD, but that's now ended.

It's quite conceivable that some components are still bought from Samsung, and Sony wouldn't be unique in that respect.... guess who Apple buy a lot of i-Phone components from?

As already mentioned, Sony used to buy some LCD panels from S-LCD, as did Samsung - they have never bought main boards from Samsung, or anyone else.

Sony boards are quite probably peppered with Samsung components, as Samsung are peppered with Sony ones, BOTH are major component manufacturers.

Samsung in particular make a LOT of semiconductor memories, you see them in all kinds of gear.

Were you perhaps thinking of VCR's or DVD recorders?, both of which Sony have bought and badged from Samsung - in fact the last models of both were Samsung units).
