I too like the look of DARK FIRE but it is a big book so will need the extra time. If no one else is interested georgy, you and I could discuss it by PM.”

Book Group Discussion

Hey, please don't stop on account of me and a couple of others moving! Sorry, I haven't been able to post much this week but I really enjoyed the Book Group discussion and would be very sad if it didn't keep going.

From my point of view I'd like a relatively short book. Maybe 'The Help' ? It's an interesting read, I think, funny and moving at the same time - lots to talk about. That would be my suggestion unless people have already read it, or seen the film.

Oh, and good afternoon all

I'd definitely give The Help a go if I could get my hands on a copy ... I'm sure there's a pretty cheap second-hand copy on Amazon... yep there's used ones for £0.01 (plus £2.98 p&p )

I'm ashamed to say I haven't a clue when it is except vaguely in June sometime. Now that would be an interesting topic for discussion - I'll take it over into TS nearer the time. Are there any Republicans among us? ”

Book Club discussion and Jubilee weekend

The Jubilee celebrations are the first weekend in June, Kay - a four day weekend in fact! I wouldn't like the Book Group discussion to be much later than that as we might all then lose the plot / start going off on holiday etc

I do think the Jubilee would be an excellent starting point for a discussion - isn't Australia keen on going republican? It's said that several countries may, after the end of our current Queen's reign........then again, who knows what effect William and Kate will have?

Btw when I'm in France I love the fact that the French are citizens, not subjects as we are. But.....when I come back, I find I love the monarchy (in its present form). There's no logic to my views, I accept

I'm annoyed I missed the thread change. Congratulations to us all and thanks for all the pics and clips.

As a specially selected book for John? I'm stumped. Only thing I could come up with was a history of cricket or Wisdens.

RE: Book Group Discussion

Close run between DARK FIRE - a mystery set in Tudor times by C J Sansome, THE HELP and THE PARIS WIFE about Ernest Hemingway's first wife.

Any preference or shall I choose?”

I would prefer either of the first two........

I enjoyed the last book discussion.....

Been thinking about this and think that as we have two threadlings moving and others are busy with the summer and the holidays, think we should start the Book Group again in the autumn - or forget it altogether.

Hope this is OK with everyone. I certainly don't want anyone to feel it is a chore to read - and I certainly don't want to put any pressure on people.”

Oh ...id like to read another book again......sooner than the autumn.......

please......

Im happy to read either the 'Help' or' Dark Fire', and to discuss them just after the jubilee weekend......

Well, yes, for Christians it is. I remember when I was a child, all radio and TV programmes were changed from the regular ones, and sad music was played all day......

The Easter Sunday felt like a real celebration

I guess there are so many different faiths now, and many people who have none, so it's different in many ways.....

I finished this off yesterday in the old thread.dididi brought it here again, why are you now saying I am carrying it on.I have explained as well, the explanation works both ways I thought. What does anyone want to me to do.It is me dragging it on now? It will be nice if we dont have judges who are taking sides.None of us wanted to be in this position.Singling me out is personal.

The baloo bears were on BBC2......on a Natural history programme......

and I missed the programmes about Art neauveaux.........I will have to watch them on i player.....what a crazy week....

I had my dentist check up , only to find out I need a new crown......which is going to be expensive and painful...so I wasnt happy.....

and im just back from doing a bus tour of the olympic village at stratford, which was fascinating, brief but fascinating. now i can watch it all happily on tv...and have some idea where everything is. We used to live in Forest Gate, so its interesting to see how the area has changed.....

what made me laugh today was how there is a lovely new sculpture, of tall things that look like bubbles or huge fishes...... just in front of the old stratford shopping centre, so as you look out from Westfield and the new train station, you just see the sculpture and not the grotty old shopping centre behind it....

and I love the idea that Macdonalds and Coca cola are the official sponsors of the olympic games......I hope all the athletes are remembering to include these in their healthy diet !!!

Sounds like an interesting day marion

I was reading today that because of the drought, the fountains are being turned off in Trafalgar Square this week, and at many other locations all over London. I hope we have rain and that they can be reinstated in time for the Olympics and the Jubilee. I'm not especially patriotic but I would like us to give a good account of ourselves if at all possible.....though of course it's only the backdrop to the actual sports and celebrations....

Can we get back to having everyone support and appreciate John James......

i think he still needs our support, and encouragement....otherwise we wont hear anything at all from him again......

im sure he will have been aware of all the fuss from the last few days....as he has been completely silent, and not said anything to anyone....

Even if he does come over to the UK, he will come as a private person and nobody will know, which would be a shame, cos he was my favourite housemate in BB11, and I would like to see him do more things again......

but obviously i would only want him to do things that he is interested in .....and to do things for himself, and not do anything just to please fans.....

this drought is highly confusing....a reservoir near us....which is meant to feed into london, looks full to me as Im driving past, and the rivers near us are also full......

the ground is extremely dry......but I just checked....we are one of the few areas in east anglia, that isnt on a drought warning.......

i thought the fountains in Trafalgar square were fed by a natural aquafer......so they were a seperate water source? And I cant imagine the newly seeded grass on the olympic park being left to go brown....????.

my daughter reckoned the drought is more to do with the worry that water will run out by the summer, with the extra visitors coming into london.......so they are conserving stocks now for the summer......

Apparently Boris Johnson (as Mayor of London) is in discussions with the water companies over it. He'd have to persuade them to make an exception, otherwise, yes, the grass would be allowed to go brown That's as I understand it, anyway....

Yes and that is the stregth of the JJAT.All the regular posters know that.I am attracting guests who are not farmiliar with the style of this thread. We dont have cliches,we agree and disagree and still debate.I dont want the JJAT to turn into something else because of me.I havent left.I just let this issue subside.

My memories of the Easter weekend as a child:
The Maundy Day Service on Radio 3 (or The Third Programme as it was in those days - not giving too much away here about my age then )
Then my dad going to the local bakery to get fresh hot x buns which were ONLY sold on Good Friday. The only shop open and that was until 11 am. Also fish purchased the day before - always fresh fish - usually plaice - a great treat.
Easter Sunday - church first thing during my churchy days - 1 chocolate egg each. Boiled eggs for breakfast. Listening to the Pope on the radio.

As more of an adult:
Always certain films on TV:
Ben Hur
King of Kings
The Greatest Story Ever Told - who can forget John Wayne as a centurion? 'Truly this was the Son of God' or words to that effect!

And those other great religious epics:
Lawrence of Arabia
Gladiator
The Sound of Music
Dr Zhivago
Mary Poppins
Toy Story
Shrek

im pretty sure that private companies and food producers/farmers will still be allowed to use hose pipes though......... its domestic consumption which is being cut...

and I heard today that you are still allowed to use a hose to clean down your dog......so I would imagine a lot of people finding the need to hose down dirty dogs in the middle of their lawns and flower beds.......

we were wondering if we could put the dog on the top of the car..........???
