Digital Spy's review of Max Payne 3

Anyone here looking forward to Max Payne 3? It's due out the 18th of May on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and the 1st of June on the PC. I'll admit, I was originally fully against this game when the first reveal was done back in 2009, but since then they've re-launched the whole thing and corrected a few major flaws that the 2009 reveal had, such as now, the game features New York in flashback parts, James McCaffrey has come back to do the voice of Max Payne, but now also the Mo-Cap for the character and whilst not fully back, the Graphic Novel style has been re-worked in a new way which looks pretty cool.

For those of you who haven't seen anything from it yet, here's a bit of a video round up showing the game:

First Trailer
Second Trailer

Design and Technology Series
Creating a Cutting Edge Action-Shooter
Targeting and Weapons
Visual Effects and Cinematics
Multiplayer Gameplay

The game runs on a completely new and updated build of the RAGE engine, which was last seen with Red Dead Redemption, this time around though multiple studios have been tasked with each platform, a whole studio working on each for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC Engines to make sure the latest build of RAGE gets the best out of all the hardware it's running on.

I heard this game had some major production issues, I would be very surprised if its any good. The setting and feel of it seems a bit weird, not even like a Max Payne game.

The Main Lead studio is Rockstar Vancouver, who have worked on Bully. There's also a load of other studios working on it to, Rockstar London are working on the PS3 version, Rockstar New England are working on the Xbox 360 version and Rockstar Toronto are working on the PC version. They've done it this way to cater to each studio's strengths so that the game will get the performance out of every platform it is on.

Rockstar NYC are working on it with their usual role of recording the voice cast/music production and promotion.

After the initial 2009 announcement, the game has pretty much been rebooted after a huge amount of negative feedback and have aimed to fix most of the complaints raised by fans so they could still push the story but now show why the events have lead up to this point as well as remaining faithful to the originals to the point where even Sam Lake (creator at Remedy) has now praised the reboot version and has gave his blessing.

it looks great, but i'd rather they kept the setting more familiar. it just seems like another game has ripped off bullet time

It's Two Weeks after Consoles, Console release is mid-May (18th) PC release is June 1st, might be a slight chance of a Steam release on the 29th if Microsoft Policy allows this.

To celebrate the release of Max Payne 3, Rockstar have teamed up with Marvel and Remedy to offer a three part comic series which bridges the gap between the ending of Max Payne 2 and the early years of Max Payne 3. Written by Dan Houser (Main Writer of Max Payne 3, Rockstar NYC) and Sam Lake (Creator of Max Payne, Main Writer for Max Payne 1 and 2, Remedy) and featuring cover artwork by Illustrator Greg Horn, the series will be available FREE to download, starting with Issue #1: "After the Fall", to be released within the next few weeks.

Huge fan of the original, the sequel though lacked the sparkle.

But these are old games - and Remedy have been too busy with Alan Wake the past 2 years to have time to make a new Max Payne.

I'll get this and play this, I literally have no idea what to expect from it though.

Only on Amazon Game downloads I'm afraid which is still a US Service at the moments. You can only buy the physical copy of the game from Amazon UK which doesn't include any extras from Amazon UK.

FFS Rockstar, learn to optimise, you lazy shits. I bet the game is less than ten hours long too.

If you'd like a comparison then GTA IV on PC was 16GB and that had a max of 1k Textures with the majority using 512 Textures, the only 2k Textures on the game were used for Loading Screen Artwork and Background Art.

With Max Payne 3, there's a 2k Texture Option which is applied to even the smallest things to increase detail to push PC Players with High End Hardware to get the most out of their systems.

If you'd like to send feedback and your opinion direct to Rockstar, then drop them a line: mouthoff@rockstargames.com

I'm sure they'd like to hear your reasons, if you think you might have trouble with the extra features in the PC version, contact Rockstar Support with your Hardware details, they'll be able to give you a rough idea of the best settings to use on the game for your hardware.

I dunno, Crysis was one of the best selling PC games in the last few years, and that still needs a fairly beefy PC to run on max, five years after it was released.

I'm sure it'll sell well...but Rockstar are ****ing awful at PC ports.

I can confirm the Xbox 360 version will be shipped on Two Discs, Disc 1 contains Most of the Single Player Story, whilst Disc 2 will contain the final chapters of the Single Player Story and Multiplayer modes. The Playstation 3 version of the game will ship on a Single Blu-ray disc and PC, well, we've already revealed the details up above.
