4.2? The current version is 5.1.

See this: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623

You need to follow the instructions for "Update your device using iTunes", as the initial instructions ("Update your device wirelessly") require iOS 5 or later.

Many thanks Matt, will give that a go. Cheers.

The latest iPad OS is 5 so that is probably the one you will be offered. It isn't that difficult a process.

The process is explained here

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623

It is all fairly simple. All you need is iTunes on your PC and the USB cable for the iPad.

One of the things that is different with iOS5 is that you can still use the device while syncing, so once it has finished updating don't worry if your apps are not all there straight away - it will still be syncing. Just let it finish.

When did you last connect it to iTunes and sync or backup? If your iPad is not even on iOS4.2, it suggests that you have never updated it (4.2.1 was released in November 2010, and was the first 4.x version available for the iPad).
