I love The Voice, apart from one thing...

The lack of critique the coaches give. It is frustrating me when noone pushes their button and when they turn around they just say 'that was phenomenal', 'you were world class', 'I loved your voice'.

Then the worst one, 'I didn't turn around because I wanted X to instead...'

Apart from the fact the singers deserve to know it just seems a little hypocritical that if they loved it that much and couldn't find one bad thing to say then they clearly would have pushed their button.

I think in the next rounds and series they should definitely improve on this.
Also, Jessie seems to be the best of them at giving constructive criticism, but still not enough.

I actually agree with this. I think like has been said on other threads they're embarrassed about rejecting the artist and say something of comfort rather than the truth. It is annoying.

The judges don't have to turn around and approve every act they see. They are only allowed 10 acts each so are going to be selective. Don't people get that?

Errr Im afraid you dont get it. People totally understand the limit imposed on the judges, however you can not say that every single singer who appears in front of them is great ........ yet show me a single comment where any of them have said 'Actually that was really bad and you barely hit any of the notes.'

I don't agree that people on here understand the limit imposed on the judges. All the performing artists have quality unlike other talent shows and the judges cannot undermine that. They don't want the acts but cannot put the talent down

Okay then.... so if they don't turn around because they don't think the singer is good enough to make their top ten...

Then why aren't they good enough? Must be some constructive reason why they weren't good enough? Even the tiniest thing that put the coach off them? But they never say anything other than how good they were.

If, as a judge, I was told I was only allowed to pick 10 acts over 4 weeks I would be looking for something exceptional. That doesn't mean the acts I didn't pick weren't good. How could I then give negative comments. Maybe the way forward would be to allow all good acts be given a vote then whittle them down in future stages as in, let me see, the X factor!!

Are you taking the pee? I'm absolutely sure people on the forum and viewers in general understand that each judge can have only 10 acts. After all it's been stated numerous times on the show. However some acts are rejected and I feel the judges reasons for this are disingenuous.

This is what I'm thinking and I believe it's because they are in the main embarrassed about the situation and don't feel confident enough for whatever reason to give a realistic critique. It is spoiling the show imo.

I disagree. There have been quite a few singers on there who have been out of tune, boring, screechy, copy cat etc and the coaches best feedback is 'I wanted Danny to have you'.

They sometimes seem scared to give critique as many of the singers are processionals and they don't want to embarrass themselves or the singer.

I think you may be right.

Although I think it's good that they don't try to humiliate people or put them down with cruel comments just to get cheap laughs, I think a true and honest critique would have to somehow be a bit more robust in its criticism at times.

I don't want the judges to mock the singers, but I would like them to demonstrate why they are the experts and see how they perceive an 'off' performance.
I'm sure that they could better illustrate a singer's weaknesses and why they didn't pick them while at the same time able to be constructive about it.

Completely agree. If they were so amazing, why didn't you turn around? Just give them constructive criticism and let them move on.

I think thats the point of the show, the criticism will come later I suspect when the coaching starts in earnest.

I think the answer to this question is simple.

Each coach can only pick 10 people and they have to mentor those 10 people. With that in place I suspect their decisions on whether to turn will be based on more than just how good their voice is but a combination of things like:

- Whether they feel that particular contestant and enjoy their style. Being good and liking someone are totally different things. I don't like Adele, she is a great singer with loads of talent, but her style just doesn't appeal to me. That kind of thing will be a factor.

- Whether they feel they can mentor a particular style or whether they feel they can make best use of that contestant.

- Having in the back of their mind that there are x amount of contestants left to hear and not wanting to fill up the 10 slots too quickly in case they shoot themselves in the foot.

- Wanting to make sure their team either has a variety of styles within it or adheres to a style that the coach feels they can make the most of.

At the end of the day, this show isn't like BGT and XF where they can let a couple of hundred people through then ditch three quarters of them in stage 2.

I think thats why sometimes the feedback is wooly, because the reasons for not turning are quite personal and not particularly useful for the contestant.

Thats why I think we get stuff like "sorry I didn't turn, you have a great voice" and the likes. I think the reason for not turning is simply that the coach for whatever reason didn't feel they were right for their group at that particular time or were apprehensive for whatever reason to choose that contestant (i.e. being aware of having too many people of one type or filling up too quickly).

There has been the odd tuning problem that has been picked up on, didn't Danny say he didn't turn around because of tuning problems in the first week? Cant remember who it was though.

I have an issue with last nights show, some singers were picked but we didnt get to see the whole performance. There was the dodgy out of tune singer that Jessie picked and the others seemed baffled. Why did we not get to see her whole performance?

I must admit that was strange they was ok to show Danny and Will saying Jessie had lot the plot but they glossed over what it was all about and what they said to the girl.

They can't really go into deep critique because most of the audience wouldn't understand technical terms but the stuff they do say is sufficient enough I think.

I actually don't think there is much to be gained by giving them much feedback. The decent singers who are pros and semi pros that have been turned down weren't dismissed because they were bad singers - just not to the taste of the mentors.

I've only seen one of the shows but the standard of singing was pretty good on the whole. Unless they are going to be coaching someone they haven't got time to talk to them about their breath control / tuning etc.

Thanks for the good post, and I do agree with some of it.
I still think there is room for some critique even if they were brilliant.
Like the woman who some Adele someone like you, I was just waiting for someone to say that it was a bad song choice, over done and too copy cat but I can't argue she had a wonderful voice.

And most of the time they don't even give your justification, I wouldn't mind if they said 'I didn't pick you because I'm looking for a soulful singer and i already have a rocky male singer' but we don't even get that often. They usually just say they were an amazing singer and 'I wish I had pushed...'

She has a really nice tone to her voice and she has a decent range. She just needs to work on her control and diction.

Agree with this comment:

She's a diamond in the rough, just give Jessie a few weeks with her. And you'll all be shut the hell up!
Audition sucked, but she got it in her

Bit of an insult to people's intelligence
I think people can understand judgement of pitch, key, tune, breathing, whether it was a bad arrangement, diction.... not that technical is it?

Agree with this comment:
Yeah, I do agree she has the range so there is potential. I just worry that if she couldn't hear how out of tune she sounded she might never be able to hear it even with lots of practice.

I think she was trying too hard to impress the judges with those vocal gymnastics she was trying to do but with a bit of guidance I think she has really good potential.
