Led Zeppelin 1975:

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me. Kind woman, I give you my all, kind woman, nothing more.

Nicki Minaj 2012:

You a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe, you a stupid hoe, you a stupid hoe, you a stupid hoe (yeah) you a, you a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid), you a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid), you a stupid hoe, you a, you a stupid hoe (stupid, stupid) (stupid, stupid).

Lyrics aren't what they use to be.

That is only one example - there are lots of lyricists about and also singer/songwriters who write beautiful lyrics. Will Young is a case in point. Some of his lyrics, particularly on the album tracks, are great. Eg White has written some lovely songs for him - Leave Right Now being one example.

Oh come on! Music has gotten worse but you used possibly the worst example. Not every song nowadays is about as that Nicki Minaj song. There are actually some beautiful lyrics nowadays. Emeli Sandè's songs, Adele's, Leona Lewis', Lana Del Rey, Beyonce and many more in the music industry have beautiful lyrics in their songs.

Kany West and Jay-Z know how to write lyrics.

Ridiculous example. So there were no joke songs in 1975? And there are no meaningful songs in 2012? Just another excuse to bitch and moan about modern music.

I think people take some songs's lyrics too seriously. There are other songs by Nicki Minaj that do have lovely lyrics. Moment 4 Life and Marilyn Monroe being two prime examples.

Ed Sheeran has written some excellent lyrics. David Gray is brilliant too. If you want meaningful Lyrics, then look no further than Tracey Chapman. There are good artists out there.

However, OP, I take your point. I do think that a lot of stuff released today is just shouting, swearing and unoriginal s***

And even Nicki has amazing lyrics in some of her songs anyway, which I think are just as good, or even better than that Led Zeppelin line.

Nicki has HUNDREDS of songs, they're not all like Stupid Hoe. Why didn't you quote Moment 4 Life? Or Monster? Or even Fly? And let's not get started on some of her mixtape songs

Plus, it's different genres. It's not uncommon for hip hop songs to be repeptitive like that.

Barbie Girl is AMAZING! Lots of people hated it at the time and thought it was atrocious, etc. though.

I'd suggest anyone who thinks any period was a golden age of music should look at the historical charts, or listen to "Pick Of the Pops".

All the lens of time does is allow us to forget about the absolute drivel that was floating around at the time.

This thread reminds me of my poor mother's shock and horror at hearing All Saints sing "I know you want a piece of my ass".

"The Beatles just sang 'I wanna hold your hand'" she exclaimed.

Poor dear.

Comparing Led Zeppelin to Nicki Minaj is where it all went wrong. All this music snobbery is so annoying now. Times and tastes change, get over it.

Ahhhh ! But Mick Jagger sang about his Little Red Rooster and Peter Green had his Girl lighting coals so he can keep his poker hot. (Lazy Poker Blues ) She was just listening to the wrong Bands.

I wish people would leave off yes music may not be at its best but there have been highs an lows throughout music so stop bitching and moaning that is but one example there are far more examples of better lyricists if you took the time to look they are quite easy to find Laura Marling being a very good example.

True. It's like comparing bistecca alla fiorentina cooked by a master chef with a Macdonald's cheeseburger.

It could be argued either way.

Going tell your mama you better do what she said
Get to the barber shop and get that hair cut off your head
Threw the canary and you fed it to the neighbours cat
You gave the cocker spaniel a bath in mother's Laundromat
- one of the songs The Beatles covered in their career. Hardly a pioneer of good lyrics tbh.

Ok, we get it, you're not a fan. Do you always have to act all high and mighty towards people who like modern pop music?
People can listen to what they want to listen to and shouldn't have to answer to arrogant folk such as yourself.

Go and listen to Queen or all that other "real music" as people such as yourself like to call it. And no, I'm not a fan of One Direction, The Wanted or Nicki Minaj. I just think it's about time you got off your high horse, went to listen to some of your oh so cool rock music, left people alone and got over yourself for thinking you're so different and superior for liking Led Zeppelin and The Who. Guess what? So do millions of other people. You're nothing special.

As Janis Joplin once said:

"Music's for grooving man, and music's not for puttin' yourself through bad changes, y'know? I mean, you don't have to go take anybody's shit, man, just to like music, y'know what I mean? You don't. So... so if you're getting' more shit than you deserve, you know what to do about it man."

Haha, shit lyrics and rubbish pop songs have always been about, it's not like all songs nowadays are lyrically similar to Stupid Hoe. Plus have you not seen Top Of The Pops from 1976? Frightening stuff.

The problem is that bad music tends to be forgotten or put in that kitschy "wow, we know it was corny, but we still love it" category, while we often overestimate the popularity of "good" acts from the past. The good acts get remembered and we figure if we remember them forty years later, they must have been huge back then. So we have a warped view: we know what's popular today, we know what was good three decades ago and we choose to compare them, which is not a like-for-like comparison.

As has been said, you only have to go look at the charts for the '70s and see they weren't only made up of greats. They had an almighty amount of fluff, just as they do today.

Stupid Hoe didn't even do well in the charts anyway. It only charted at #63.
