My Mum gave me a joint of gammon

dunno what I am going to do with it apart from last night i put it in water to get rid of excess salt

I am going to cook it today - dont know how but i prefer to use oven than the hob

I was thinking to wrap it in foil and cook it in the oven (how long for?) - remove the foil to brown it

I can only think to serve it sliced as a steak with chips & egg but wondering whether it would go with gravy, roast spuds & vegs

I got a soaked gammon joint & looking for cooking ideas and serving suggestions

Gammon tastes wonderful if covered with Coca Cola plus an onion cut in half. You can either use a slow cooker or cook in a pan on the hob

Do a Google search for Nigella Lawson's ham in coca cola.

Gammon is fine for a roast dinner. If you have wine or cider, they would be perfect for a gravy or sauce. My friend served sprouts and red cabbage with his gammon roast last week, it was delish.

Cook at 30 mins per 500gms +30 (using foil method just as you described). If you want to add a glaze for the last 20-30 mins of cooking, honey and mustard is traditional, but you can use marmalade, red currant jelly etc.

EDIT: If the joint is large enough for leftover that you may want to turn into pea and ham soup (say), then boiling is a good idea. Steer clear of using cola though, it is foul as a stock, though I know some american's might disgree

I always do mine on the hob, as I've found it's much more succulent. Cover with water, bring to the boil and remove the scum. Cook for 20 minutes per pound, but leave it in the water at the end until you're ready to eat it.

I serve it with new potatoes and salad, but you can finish it off in the oven with a glaze and serve with roasties and veg.

Add 2 onions and some cloves to a large pan. put your joint in and cover with coke/water and simmer for a few hours depending on size.

Let the joint cool and then remove 2/3 of the fat and the score the rest in a cross cross pattern.

Mix apricot preserve with mustard and brown sugar. spread the mixture on to fat generously.

Cook in the oven for about 45 minutes or until the joint is golden brown.

Gammon is fantastic for roast dinner.

I then use any leftover for sandwiches and these. Delicious.

I love it in a sort of alternative roast dinner - with new potatoes either just boiled with butter and herbs or roasted, mixture of veg and cheese sauce!

A mustard or parsley sauce would go quite well aswell i think

Definitely recommend the coca cola option.

It makes it taste so good. Doesn't taste of the coke, just a nicer taste than plain cooked.

I boil it in a pan with the coke, not sure how long for, you can just tell when it's cooked.

If you spice it up and slow cook it then you can make a version of pulled pork.
I've done it before and the texture was great, unfortunately it was too salty as I didn't soak it.

If you cook it so it is firm then it's fine for a roast or gammon & pineapple.

I'd just roast it. Love it but the one we had at New Year was salty and we'd soaked it and bioled it and changed thje water twice.
