Is my sky box ok on the carpet???
Bit of a stupid question
Getting an amp this weekend and having to rejig where everything goes... I cant fit everything under the telly on the glass shelf so I am having to put the SKY box on the carpet UNDER the bottom glass shelve See pic here http://www.imagehop.com/show.php?id=367ef7c2ec0c6 Is there any problems in putting a sky box on the floor (carpet). It has a gap 3/4 cm Above and below (due to the little stands on the bottom and air all around. Just the wife asked me if it was ok and it wont catch fire on the carpet. - then ofcourse I start thinking about it Cheers |

does the bottom of the digibox get warm/hot? if it doesnt then i guess it should be ok, if it does it might be worth putting a peice of wood or glass the same size as the digibox underneath it.

Sky box on carpet
From oldie. For maximum life and reliability electronic equipment needs to run as cool as practicable. If the Sky box has got little feet under it, then it is intended to be run with an air gap, for cooling. Also, if there are any holes in the base or on the sides near the base, then dust can be drawn into the works by convection. That's not good for it either. On principle I NEVER put any mains powered electronic equipment that is intended for continuous use directly on the carpet. Strongly endorse previous post that suggests putting something like glass, wood or similar smooth rigid material under it. Suggest it is made about half an inch or so larger than the Sky box footprint.

I think you should put something hard and flat (ie piece of wood or glass etc) underneath so that the ventilation works properly. Another reason is to prevent fluff and dust being sucked inside as the warm air flows in the bottom and out of the top of the box (in theory I suppose that does make it a small fire risk).

Looking at the picture, it would be better on something beside the TV as there isn't much of a gap under that shelf.

You could scrap the VCR and buy a DVD recorder, then you can scrap the DVD player too.
P.S. Just a suggestion if you have the money. I don't own a DVD recorder before you all yell at me. |

Having looked at the picture, I think I'd be inclined to get rid of the carpet.

I'd not recommend anything on the carpet really, but certainly not a VCR, all that fluff gets inside it. If you must put it on the carpet at least lay it on a board or something so that the vent slots in the bottom don't get block.
I'd also try to not cover the top of the digibox either as it'll overheat and die sooner rather than later. Or let the digibox overheat and die, get a new Sky+ and get rid of video and Skybox, stick Sky+ where video was. Easy. |
