We're all over Sunderland and 3-0 up, so we bring on Bertrand to tighten things up. Now Sunderland are all over us.

Torres four in two games - has Benitez really achieved the impossible?

Only one of any worth really, one penalty and 2 goals against a fairly average Danish team.

Though it will do Torres's confidence the world of good and could be a sign of things to come.

good game from torres today

really liked to see him taking the ball for the pen and lashing it home. was unlucky not to get a hatty.

Any idea why he took the pen?

Lamps not on the field, hazard missed his last one?

Torres never takes pens, so it was great to see him finally take the ball and score (was a cracking pen too).

Going forward we were great, but Luiz was at fault for their goal - a poor error. JT cannot come back soon enough.

Luiz was expecting to take it...Torres grabbed it from him. Doubt it was planned before the game, so no idea why they let him have it at only 1-0 up.

The question i was asking - and i'll prob get a better answer from you, was - why has Torres suddenly become a pen option when he hasn't taken them in the past under any circumstances, or under Rafa?

Didn't see the game, but I was relieved to see the result. We really needed that.
From what I've read, and the highlights on MOTD, we were quite impressive today ?

yes, going forward we could have had more. Even with oscar on the bench and moses in the more central role. Torres was unlucky not to have more, seriously, not bad finishing, just good saves.

However, having gone in front Chelsea became their usual fragile selves. Luiz tried to be too clever on the edge of the box and gave the ball away for their goal. They could have had another and in the end CFC were hanging on to 3:1. Not exactly great when playing a team that is absolutely useless.

We are desperate for Terry to come back and get a hold of Luiz, or better still play along side cahill, ivan on the right and luiz in the Dm role along side the ram.

Hazard played better and should have had a cast iron stuck on pen.

The good: Looking like we can score a bucket full again, Torres demanding the ball to take a pen

The bad: Luiz at the back, no steel in midfield

Moses is making a difference. He gets overlooked as he cost relative peanuts compared to Oscar and Hazard, but at the moment he's outperforming both of them and earning his starting place. He's also linking well with Torres and providing a foil for him with his running and pulling away defenders.

I agree

oscar, hazard, mata and moses - what an abundance of riches!

marin can't even get a look in.

Even though we are a disaster, i absolutely love our team!

Holy shit....Nando not only takes a pen...but scores it! His first in this country!

We were still fragile at the back, desperately need JT back but it was a much better performance, it was needed, before setting off for Japan.

I have Thursday off work, so I can watch us at 10.30am! Would very much like to see us win the CWC, will be a big boost for the team.

11 goals now...the demise of fernando torres has been greatly exagerrated!

Thanks for the summary..sounds as if things were a bit better, but the same problems remain.
Over the entire game, was Torres significantly better or did he just take his goal well ? I suppose what I'm trying to work out is if anyone thinks he could genuinely become our number 1 striker, or should we still be looking for an alternative ?

He worked really hard and was bright. Took the first goal really well, real Torres of old type of goal...and for me, big turning point, actually wanting to take a pen!

Torres was better yes, he looked like he wanted to score rather than being embarrassed to.

He needs to do this for 5 or 6 games in a row, otherwise there is simply no way one game can mean he is back.

We definitely should be looking for an alternative - perhaps some of the problem is that it is all on torres. If torres misses, CFC dont score as the team is set up with him as the focus.

An in form Torres along side Falcao with hazard, mata, oscar and moses should be our front 6

Thanks Heavenly and codeblue. I always prefer to hear things from our resident experts, rather than relying on the media.
With Torres, it sounds like wait and see, while keeping our fingers crossed.
I still can't believe we will really see the Torres of old again, but perhaps he can adapt his game to compensate for that lack of blinding pace ?
Like your thinking codeblue, can't we fit in Marin as well. Who needs defenders ?

Shearer on MOTD said the team is now helping Torres more which is no doubt down to Benitez, he said that they are making runs to take away defenders which means he's no longer having to take on two or more.

Anyways next stop the World Club Championship - hopefully he can take his recent resurgence to Japan
