What is a Yorkshire pudding?

The precooked mix is a batter.
When it is cooked is it a pastry? a bread? a pancake?
Maybe that's just why it's called pudding because it's hard to class any other way.

Traditionally they were eaten before the meal to act as a filler.
Usually now a days they are eaten as part of the meal.

I've just had a left over one with some maple syrup as a snack and it was very tasty indeed.

It's a very versatile item.

When I was a child visiting my Yorkshire nanna we would have a large Yorkshire pudding filled with gravy as a starter, usually for Sunday lunch, then more with the main meal, any leftovers we children would eat them with golden syrup or jam

I have never thought of it before. I like the idea of eating one full of gravy! Mmmm! I just recently have started making them from scratch since I found a fool proof recipe! My head has been going wild with ideas on how to serve them! I make a sausage casserole and the gravy is amazing but I always have loads leftover - maybe thinking about making toad in the hole and using the gravy for that!

That's the one I use. Althought it is half & half water & milk and has a splash of vinegar.

Me, too. First time I tried I used all milk and omitted the vinegar, and it was too 'cakey'. Since I followed the Turner method properly, it's never let me down.

Given that yorkshire puds are similar in make-up to pancakes then I guess they can be just as versatile as pancakes in terms of sweet or savoury. Personally though, as a yorkshire lass, I will stick to having them with my Sunday roast!

I dunno, but love 'em

When we were kids if there were any left after the sunday roast, we'd have them with jam for our pudding.

I like toad-in-the-hole but I'm not a fan of Yorkshire Puds with a roast. I'd rather have an extra spud or some more veg.
