I've had these for a few years and use the middle one almost daily:

You could do worse!

I did a little worse.
I bought a Japanese knive set from eBay that cost around £25. It was a full set of about 10 knives inc a cleaver and all in a wallet.

When I went on Amazon and looked in the papers it seems to be the same sets under different branding. Pretty sure that jean-patrique sold the exact same set (or not even sold, almost gave away with vouchers).

I mean they're ok for home knives but nothing special.
Infact I went on to buy a 8" chefs knive for £10 and that is my fave knive and suits me fine for at home.

I'm saving up for a nice decent quality 3 or 4 piece set (or the basic individual knives).

IMO Global can't be beaten. They are expensive, but worth every penny!

How do people manage to buy knives on the internet? Dont you have to check the knife balances in your hand and feels good?

I agree with you on this. Definitely need to try out the balance and handle. I am thinking of getting a new knife as my favourite carbon steel Sabatier knife is getting a bit worn after 35 years. I want to get another carbon steel knife before they all disappear.

I agree but when I got mine (see original post) they were a free introductory offer, just p&p, so I thought why not. I was attracted by the fact that they were one, solid piece of stainless steel. No handle screws that can loosen over time or rubber grip that falls apart and no joins that can harbour germs. As it happened, they turned out to be very nicely weighted and comfortable for me to use and ,as I say, I use the middle one almost daily.

My mrs who works in catering uses kitchen devils brand.

Personally I use Richardson laser set but when I looked at their new range recently they seem to have gotten thinner and cheaper feeling. It also features a serrated edge so not suitable in all situations.

If you're buying a whole set for under £50 then I doubt you're bothered about the weight and feel.

Maybe degsy, but as I said mine were free, just p&p, so I thought it was worth a punt and I was pleased with the outcome.

Re the Viners set, Viners is a well known brand and it's quite possible the poster saw them in a shop, liked them and did an internet search for the best price. That's what I do for all sorts of goods.

I have an Aldo Zilli set, for the price (shopping channel) they are great, I got them 4 years ago.

I do have a Scanpan parring knife which is my "everything" knife and use a Global meat carving knife sometimes but it's very sharp and it scares me!

I the big one in the Tesco knife promotion...

http://www.tesco.com/thomas-knives/
(it's the back one in the photo and is much bigger than it looks).

I love it, it's lovely to hold, stays sharp for ages and is just nice to use. I got a new sharpening steel in the same offer, too.

My favourite knife is a Global quite big one (I think that's the technical term) and I use it every day.

My worst one is serrated like a bread knife on one side and smooth like a carving knife on the other side.

It is absolutely useless and once led to a bit of a manual injury when I forgot that both sides were cutting surfaces.

I also have a Sabatier with a long, quivering tapering blade that I'm a bit scared of.
