I really don't understand how they are so successful?

They are average at best and look & perform so awkwardly together.

They are nothing more than a poor mans Blue.

Also they always seem to be slagging someone off and name dropping Bieber all the time yet Justin seems more interested in One Direction.

I think they're overrated. Their songs are average at best and are nothing exciting. I like Glad You Came though *runs and hides*

Me neither!

I get 1D's popularity (even if they're not my cup of tea), just like I get JB's success. But the success of The Wanted, particularly the American success, completely baffles me. They're pants. Their music is bland and boring. None of them are made of particularly heartthrob-like material. Hm.

Global Talent and Capital FM are probably the main reasons.

I don't get it either, a couple of them were on the radio a while back and they came across as cocky, immature morons.

I actually don't see the appeal of One Direction, they're average singers, average looking, one of them (I don't know his name) can't sing at all and looks like a mong!

I just don't get it...

Well I much prefer One Direction. They are, for me, a bit like the Spice Girls; Good pop tunes, cheeky and fun. Their Up All Night album is really good, yes of course it can be cheesey naff but I love it.

The Wanted on the other hand bore me a bit. Their albums are mainly filler.

The Spice Girls had a personality and a general sense of how to make a good pop song i dont get the success of 1D, The Wanted, or especially Beiber they are all incredibly average dull and insipid.

I don't think they are *that* successful really. They may have a great radio profile and a couple of successful singles but they've yet to have a decent selling album. Kinda similar to The Saturdays in that sense, but even their debut when Platinum.

It's too early to tell weather they'll have ongoing success in the US aswell. They have great backing but the fact they've chosen Heart Vacancy, a bore fest in my opinion, as the second single does puzzle me indeed.

The Wanted and 1D both had a great song.

for The Wanted it was Glad You Came
for 1 Direction it was What Makes You Beautiful

both bands dont have a great catalogue of music. without these singles they'd not have the success. the singles would be hits for any artist. they're universal pop tunes.

I know right! I love boy bands, but to me they have got to be the most useless boy band ever. They look awkward together, they're not even attractive (they look like rejected male models). They can barely sing, they can't dance, they can't play any instruments.. what's the point? They're completely and utterly useless! They make me cringe so badly!!

And I just don't understand Glad you came? It just sounds like early 00's poppy club music. To me it's a bit like elevator music.. I'm suprised it's so succesful. It's beyond me!

I actually think WMYB isn't the best 1D song, Tell Me A Lie and Stole My Heart are stronger imo.

But I agree GYC is one of their best singles (TW)

I totally agree with you. They could actually have a big hit with those two songs.

..This entire thread makes me laugh.

''Poor man's Blue'' I think you'll find even Blue were a poor man's Blue.

Seriously if cheesy manufactured ''Boy Bands'' were options in the Stock Market, everybody who ever invested in them would be flat broke.

Blue were a bloody good group. Tracks like All Rise, One Love & Fly By crap all over anything The Wanted have ever done.

I dont know those songs. But the point I was making was that WMYB is the most appealing to generic music fans. The songs you mention probably are favourites to fans, or people who are really into their music. But the music-buying population is a wide scope now with iTunes etc, and WMYB is generic enough to appeal widely

...Yeah you keep telling yourself that my friend, I'm sure they'll be remembered 100 years from now along with Elgar, The Beatles, David Bowie and Pink Floyd.

I agree that WMYB has a wide appeal. Tell Me A Lie and Stole My Heart are also songs that have wide appeal just like WMYB imo.

I don't get it either but then I am not their target audience, so I'm not intended to get it I suppose.

Global Talent and Capital FM are probably the main reasons.
Basically this. The owner of Capital FM got his millionaire dad to invest in a radio network but Capital FM hasn't been bringing in much money so now he's using the radio station to make money through other things. He realised if you play a song constantly on a radio station, it gets stuck in people's heads and they buy it. Cue The Wanted with 'All Time Low', since then he's kind of made them his pet project. He's hired Justin Bieber's manager to help them in the US which is why it's working out so well over there.

Quite a few media people aren't happy about it. When they constantly play their songs on the radio, no one mentions Capital FM's parent company are doing it so that you'll buy the song. In most areas of business, you have to declare conflict of interest, on TV they have to place product placement symbols to show people that 'we're making money from the things you are seeing/hearing on this show' but there's none of that with Capital FM. It makes you wonder how many people would actually buy the songs if they knew that it was all about Capital FM's parent company hard selling it to them. No other acts in the music industry really have the luxury of having a big network of radio stations backing them this way.
