Dried Mint

Why is it so rarely stocked by shops.

I know I can get it from Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and the like.
But its one of those stock items that I buy rarely so don't tend to think of it when 'big' shopping.

Usually I remember when the lamb is cooked and find the jar is empty. Small shops sell all sorts of herbs, but never mint. They always have ready made mint sauce but that is just not the same as homemade.

I looked in the range, where they stock big packs of herbs and spices, but there again everything but mint.

I watched a show the other day where they said something like 90% of Brithish mint is grown for mint sauce production.

I guess it's just one of those herbs that has it's uses else where. Fresh, mint sauce, mint extract for mints, toothpaste, mouthwash etc.

Also possible that it doesn't have a good sell as a dried herb.

Saying that though the major supermarket sites list dried mint.

I would have thought if you want to better a jarred mint sauce you would make your own with fresh mint?

Have a look into growing your own mint, its meant to be really easy in a pot.

It probably isn't sold much dried because of the widespread use of home grown mint.

I can't really understand why you'd consider dried mint a better home made substitute than a shop bought sauce.

It is indeed very easy to grow in a pot, so easy in fact that if you put it straight into the ground it'll probably grow rampant. Even my grandmother could grow mint, so if you prefer good quality mint I'd recommend you grow your own.
