HDD HD/DVD Recorder with HDMI & Scart inputs?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a high-definition HDD/DVD recorder (min HDD 250 GB) which has as many inputs as possible.

Most of the ones on the market in the UK do not have HDMI inputs - I'm guessing this is deliberate for copy-protect reasons.

I want to record (& timeshift) from a variety of sources - Sky box, other HD satellite receiver, Games console, and Freeview+ Digital Terrestrial tv. Ideally I would like Scart, component, RF and HDMI inputs, so I don't need to keep removing and inserting cables to switch between sources. Also I'd like to be able to transfer to USB stick and watch on PC later.

Does anyone have any good suggestions please?

HDCP used on HDMI prevents a source connecting to a recorder so there's little point in fitting hdmi inputs. A few do have inputs but only as a convenience to allow two or more inputs to share the output. You can't record from them.

A few PC cards have hdmi in that is recordable but only if you have a non hdcp source.

Apart from very short recordings in AVCHD format DVD isn't suitable for recording HD anyway. You need blu-ray.

Blu-Ray recording and playback would be a bonus.

If not HDMI inputs, then as many inputs as possible - scart, component, RF. The recording doesn't necessarily need to be in HD, though this would be ideal. If I have an HD source, can I use a component to send it to a recorder with a component input, even if the recording is not made in High-Def?

Basically the answer is yes, you can convert hdmi to HD Component and that is recordable.

Google HDfury2 for an example.

Hauppage make a HD component recorder popular with old sky box owners with component out.

Panasonic do a range of HD blu-ray pvrs with external recording capability (They are very expensive). afaik they will only record in HD from a camcorder source or from their own tuners. About the only way to get near to what you want is to build your own PC based system.
