Er, presumed that was just Jenna. No offence to accents but wherever it is she comes from, that dialect is hellish unattractive.

Whenever I hear Jenna, it just puts me in mind of a duck quacking away.

In the first part of last night's programme I genuinely couldn't understand what she was saying. Her voice is a bit like Chelsee Healey's but a bit deeper. What part of the world is the accent from?

You would think they would have learnt by now, screaming at eachother..I'll never understand why they do it - they must know how it looks/sounds. Ridiculous lol.

lol, it is quite a broad accent. I find it refreshing when we hear a clear regional accent, rather than the received-pronunciation we often get. As long as we can understand what they are saying ofc. There again, I'm from the North too, but my parents did drum out of me any 'lazy speach' I would pick up

It's probably the way it was cut, but I felt Jenna wasn't given a chance to speak by laura and the horrible noise was because of laura's squeaky voice. I felt laura had a smug, dismissive attitude to Jenna. siralan clearly doesn't rate jenna, he should have told laura to shut up. Yes jenna looks a bit down in the dumps and has a sort of monotone accent, but she deserved her chance to speak and laura seemed very full of herself (I knew she wouldn't be fired, although deserved to be). I don't like people who smile during arguments like laura did to jenna.

take the point BUT I really couldn't pick up what she was saying! Also, I'm not convinced that an accent is necessarily attractive just because it is a regional accent. Some are wonderful, but Jenna's is just hard on the ears and grates. No lyrical quality at all.

Out of interest, what accent is it?

It sounds like a Lancashire accent to me. I've from the North, between Liverpool and Manchester but she doesn't sound Mancunian.

It sounds a little like a Wigan/St Helens kind of accent, it's not Preston or Blackburn, and certainly not Bury or Bolton!

Jenna has the most appalling accent, but then it does reflect her capabilities which are similarly appalling.

It does seem to be a fairly good rule: a strong regional accent means you are thick, and the more ugly the accent the greater the IQ deficit.

I presume that the mechanism for this rule is that someone with an ugly accent and is not aware of it is stupid. There is no excuse for not being unaware of an ugly regional accent unless one is so unworldly as not to be aware of accents in this world, and, of course, to be that unworldly is an indicator of stupidity.

An intelligent person would make an effort not to be handicapped by an ugly accent, and there are many well publicised cases in the media of people who have ditched their accents, old cases include Sue Lawley and Ned Sherrin, and a more recent case is Kevin Bridges who is attempting to curtail some of the offensive tones of his strong Glaswegian accent.

Maybe Blackpool way then. It's not Wigan or St. Helens, I have colleagues from both those towns and she doesn't sound like them.

Although on saying the above, Kim Marsh is from Wigan way and you would never guess from her accent

I thought Laura was a bit mean and Jenna had the second highest sales of the task. I think Jenna could be a dark horse.

lol - I getcha completely agree, it's annoying when an accent is that thick that you cannot understand it. It's even worse when it is over the phone. My slight accent is nothing like hers, proper pronunciaton was drummed into me by my parents. Yet I can understand her - curious that, I wonder if our ears become attuned to it and makes it easier to understand if you are in roughly the same area? And yes, just because it's regional, doesnt make it attractive, but like I said I did like that I could hear a familiarish accent. I don't find it 'wonderful' or 'lyrical' obvisously. But I don't dislike it.

It's definately not a manchester or bury accent, sounds perhaps north lancashire? That having been said, you can get huge differences in accents from just a 3-4 miles away. There's a place 3 miles away, where people call buses, 'buzzes' lol

Hey Flossie: I so admire your post. Tell it like it is. But I hope you don't anticipate a long life because the PC brigade will certainly have you in their sights.

Agreed, but she was street savvy enough to know that she needed to keep a regional twang, but get rid of any strong nasal tones.

But then who decides which accents are the ugly ones? And Lord Sugar himself has a thick accent; is he unintelligent?

I don't think he has an accent - maybe a touch of sarf' London but that is more bad speaking rather than a dialect. And whatever else it is, it isn't a 'thick' accent like Jenna's which is impenetrable.

I appreciate the admiration

I have long practise at fending off the PC brigade, who do not understand the horrible consequences of their actions.

Well I believe received pronunciation is the standard that should be emulated.

I have a theory that the more genteel and sophisticated a society, the more genteel and sophisticated the accent of that society, and conversely, the more brutal and unsophisticated a society, the more brutal and unsophisticated the accent.

And Sugar is pretty thick I think, he still doesn't seem to understand the form of the verb to use in the most basic sentences, he will often say things like "you does" or something equally retarded. He is basically just a market trader who got lucky, and when he did get into the big business league, he failed. Amstrad computers and similar parts of his empire died horribly.

Jenna comes from Jennaville. It's a little-known location down t'pit where she lives surrounded by pigeons and whippets, wearing a flat cap and rollers and TALKIN' SENSE!

Seriously though, she does nothing to advertise the north of the country and I speak (rather less abrasively) as someone who hails from there. As Jack Lemmon said to Tony Curtis in "Some Like It Hot" - "Nobody talks like that!"
Except it would seem they do.
But from where I know not.

Your favour towards RP is subjective though. Many people find it unpleasant to listen to.

I agree with you about Sugar's painful grammar, but bad grammar is a different matter from an accent. If you think he's stupid, I wouldn't agree, though he has his prejudices and limitations.

Totally briliiant - you had me going there for a moment. But aren't you afraid of the PC brigade? I've been getting a terrible pasting on the Karen needs a makeover thread. Must say these boards produce terrific humour but quite a lot of aggression which is unpleasant

It's an interesting theory. My roommate when I was at Uni (He's German from Bonn), he said to me one day that East German people have a very barbaric accent. It seems to me that it is not only the Brits who prefer certain accents.

I've been to France many times and I always find french accent from the North is easier to understand compared to accent from the Southern France (l'accent du soleil).

Another example is the case of Portuguese language. Most People from Brazil cannot understand Portuguese spoken in Portugal. They even have different words for many things. My friends from Portugal always say that they speak the correct form of Portuguese and they believe that their accent is more sophisticated compared to Brazillian Portuguese. Some even say that the Brazillians speak Portuguese like "children".

However, I think the Brazillian Portuguese is sexier and more melodic. I've just heard George Michael & Astrud Gilberto singing "Desafinado" in Brazillian Portuguese (check it on youtube). I just love the sound of it. It is so soothing to the ears.
