When I read the thread title my brain missed out the word CAFE and I wondered if he was a stinky bugger.

The top n bottom of it is ... His place was judged to be a dump and the sink being in the wrong place isn't the only reason the cafe got a low grade.

Interesting comment in Daily Mail;
Look, Environmental Health Officers will do their best to award the maximum number of stars. What a customer sees 'up front' may not be quite what a full inspection reveals 'out back'. Frankly, if you saw what these people see every day, you'd be completely shocked! But what the eye doesn't see... To get one star, things must have been pretty bad. More fool Andre not to get proper advice before fitting this place out, just to save himself a few quid, that's what it usually is. Now it's costing him, not only in cash to do it properly, but in reputation. I'm pleased that the local council did their job 'without fear or favour' when rating this cafe... good on them!!! |

As I said before the health n hygiene officer is not there to shut a place down. They give you a warning and tell you what has to be improved and by what date. For him to receive a bad grade the standards must of been terrible. A sink in the wrong place is something they know you can't change in a few days and they give you time

Another comment from the article in the DM , this one gives a different perspective
1 star can be awarded for insufficient paper work or record keeping. If you want the real reason for the one star apply for the report from the local council under the freedom of information act. Perhaps the DM should research properly for a change. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz1rrQAvckx |

The one star rating from the Food Standards Agency states that ‘Major improvement is necessary’ and is based on how hygienically food is handled, prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored. The inspectors also look at the ‘condition of the building..the cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation’. It seems that the manager has replied, and has put new procedures in place. To be honest I would have expected a 4 or 5 star report, a new business and new premises kitted out. I might be wrong but didn't the family have a previous business so if thats the case, a manger with previous experience. They have time to get things up to standard and get a new rating with a new inspection. |

Sorry Momma my tosh comment wasn't aimed at you... I ment the quote saying its down to paper work. My husband ran his own Cafe for 4 years and I have had dealings with Health and Hygiene inspectors. The ones I've delt with were very fair and helpful and didn't want to lower the scores. They tell you you have x amount of weeks to sort it and they will return unannounced to ensure you have done the recommended things. If it is a dangerous practise they shut you down straight away.
The only paper work they want to see is the fridge temp records.. Has to be taken twice a day... And your labelling system for food. |

A business barely 5 months old getting this rating is not good news. Usually if standards slip, it's after the business has grown and the mgt may be paying a little less attention to detail. But to only receive one star so soon - when they should be completely focused on making it a success - suggests style over substance and poor business practice from the start. Too much attention on getting it in the news IMO and not enough on the nuts and bolts of running a professional business.
I'm sure they'll sort it out but it's a bad start and bad publicity for them in a difficult market. Also, either I've dreamed it or I read somewhere that he's just signed a lease on his 2nd coffee shop in Brighton. Not good timing or advertising with such a poor rating on the existing 'showcase' shop. Maybe they should focus on running one properly before expanding the NY 'coffee experience'. |
