As I said the BBC need to slash that bill - either by taking a gamble on the bidding or perhaps looking for a joint deal where they keep the rights for Saturday nights (and the final day of the season) and another FTA broadcast has highlights of Sunday and midweek games.”
Without the massive rights fees, and without the audience. At all. Especially as C4 already have racing covered on a Saturday afternoon so it would be splitting the audience and needless duplication. And football shouts loudest in this country because it is the most popular sport and BBC Sport needs a massive football presence. That's why the MOTD equivalent for rugby is on ITV4 and in the middle of the night on ITV1. And if you have a finite budget for sport, it needs to be where the viewers are - Saturday nights.
And what would be the point of two channels sharing the highlights rights, it would confuse fans and half the highlights would be of no value whatsoever to any broadcaster. Match of the Day guarantees top class football forty weeks a year and is demonstrably the way most fans want to see it. Suggesting it's worth getting rid of it for some middling horse racing is ludicrous.

Well, they still have the rights to the Scottish Cup, natch, but they won't be showing that on the network (I think the new deal kicked in this season as this weekend was the first time I can recall Sky showing both semi-finals, simulcasting the BBC Scotland game in addition to their exclusive match). As for the home nations' matches, they'll be limited to buying up away games, and the new central rights deal for qualifiers is about to kick in.

BBC3 always used to do spin-offs, it had a Strictly spin-off in series one (before It Takes Two began) and a Dance X spin-off and a Strictly Dance Fever spin-off and a Fame Academy spin-off (and that had a CBBC spin-off as well). I mentioned last week that it could be argued The Voice had less hype than the likes of Fame Academy simply because you're getting one show a week.

Still meant Adrian Chiles had to humiliatingly say on the dot of eight o'clock it was going to follow. It was probably never going to start at eight, even if it was a dull 1-0 it wouldn't have finished until 7.55 and with no highlights show they would have to have had some analysis.
I remember after the 1999 Champions League Final they showed When Athletes Attack, a clip show about sports stars in trouble, which I remember was also delivered in 30, 45 and 60 minute versions (and also I remember they also re-did the links, because John Thomson was billed as presenter in the Radio Times, but Steve Penk ended up presenting it). And also the familiar billing in the Radio Times used to be "If the football goes into extra time, a shorter You've Been Framed will be shown".

They always used to show it on BBC2 up until about a decade ago, usually on a Sunday teatime. A bit like how they used to do the Booker Prize live but a few years back it was announced in the Ten O'Clock News instead. I think this was a case of the organisers filming it off their own back so the Beeb showed it as it didn't cost anything.

It does work all the better for it too, I like how they're never billed or introduced or anything, so it seems very slick. One of the best things about The Voice is that it doesn't seem like all the hopeless BBC light entertainment shows of the past.

And the repeats are clashing now as well!
