I'm really not that surprised that ratings for The Apprentice have gone down, even though they are still pretty good and solid, it's a combination of a lacklustre series with dull/unlikeable candidates and general overkill of the format. The Junior versions don't really help either.
Surely the ratings for the Apprentice being lower is because its not on in the Summer like it normally is, it doesn't seem to do nearly as well outside of its natural summer home, it didn't do well in the Autumn a couple of years ago either and bounced back when it went back last year.

BBC1's 9pm Panorama special on 'ivory wars' predictably bombs with 2.3m.

I think lots of people do care....but they recoil from programes that involve animal cruelty.

Had a feeling BBC1 would come a distant third last night. Indeed with White Heat presumably well under 1m, a bit of a trouncing for the Beeb. I wouldn't be surprised if Russell Howard on BBC3 was ahead of BBC2.

Glad Derek did ok. It wasn't perfect, in fact I thought the lead character was overplayed somewhat, but it had charm and amused. It was better than Life's Too Short anyway...

Surprised an old Peter Kay show got 3.3m which has been on so many times before.

I would have thought the opposite - this was the BBC trying to play the populist card - a bit like Panorama does Rolf's Animal Hospital

Ricky Gervais' Derek was seen by 1.86m (9.2%) on C4 last night. Another 246k (2.1%) watched on C4+1

Peter Kay averages 3.3m (with +1)

Source: Michael Rosser
The C4 continuity announcer was saying earlier in the evening that the Peter Kay concert was ''the biggest selling video ever.'' Presumably he meant the biggest-selling Peter Kay video ever

Peter Kay repeats always tend to do well, for some reason. Good start for Long Lost Family, I think that might be one of its highest ratings, I don't remember it going over 5m for series 1?

Don't be daft! Animal Hospital?

The ratings give you an answer to your "populist" argument!

What's wrong with BBC1 being populist anyway, we all pay for it and it should therefore broadcast mainstream programmes for a mass audience.

Surprised an old Peter Kay show got 3.3m which has been on so many times before.
Not surprised at all. His repackaged DVDs sell like hot cakes and tickets for his shows sell out in minutes. They could repeat it in the same slot next week and 3m would still watch...

I wonder if George's view that anything involving animals is "populist" has anything to do with Planets Funniest Animals outrating Titanic at the weekend?

With 3.16m viewers for the drama, "populist" it ain't...

Are the Derek figures for the actual 28m running time (including the break) or for the 35m slot?

And badly misjudging what 'populist' actually means.

Talk about spinning it! 1.7m at 10pm only beat Channel 5 and BBC2, ITV2+1 at 11pm had 400k.

ITV2's 1.75m also had more viewers than Channel 4 between 10-10.45pm on average (Derek ran until 10.35pm) so I can see why she said it had more viewers than 3 of the terrestrial channels.

Remember though that Juice is 45 mins and ran until 10:45pm and Derek was only 35 mins, so it was probably just ahead of C4 across the whole slot.

Edit: rzt beat me to it!

This IS its natural home. It aired slightly later into the summer last year only because it had aired the Autumn before so they wanted a slightly bigger gap between the two series. All the other series on BBC One have aired from late March to June, as is the case with this series.

Out of interest, i don't suppose anyone has access to the AI's for BGT and TV, would be interesting to see if they are quite close or if TV is far ahead

As mentioned, it is on virtually the same time of year as it "usually" is anyway, starting in March. And nobody ever remembers when programmes are on anyway, hence the million threads on here about shows that are on at 11.30pm on Sunday night in mid-August with people amazed they're repeats.

Surprised an old Peter Kay show got 3.3m which has been on so many times before.
Indeed, and just to point out that Channel Four also trailed it as well, which they wouldn't normally do with the umpteenth repeat of an ancient DVD. You can tell why C4 indulge Kay with those ratings but it completely undermines everything they ever say about innovation and originality.

Why does nobody care about the ugly animals? Its only the photogenic ones that get onto tv....
Those beautiful elephants, yes, especially those really cute ones where their tusks have been forcibly removed.

Anyway, it's not been mentioned here I don't think but ITV's Saturday Kitchen rip-off starts tomorrow - at 8.25am! I dunno what the point of that is.

On Saturday 24th March, the AI's were: BGT- 82, TVUK- 81

Those are the only Ai's available so far as the usual source who posts the AIs hasn't posted any more since then. Incidentally, BGT's launch episodes in the last two years have had 78 (2011) and 81 (2010), so it did better this time.

Well that's what i was basically asking, whether all these people who've turned from BGT actually exist, apparently not!

Cheers so much as always rzt. Interesting to see that despite nearly everyone saying how they prefered The Voice, soaring above BGT in which is best polls, yet there is actually nothing seperating them in the AI's.

Furthermore, why is a new series of Dinner Date starting on Sunday morning at 8:25am?

I like that they are trying, but 8:25am is way too early for both shows.
