not sure the recent press stories are anti-Cowell. Usually whenever there's a dip around Syco UK shows, the press conveniently drudges up a story relating to TXF or BGT.

I don't think BGT viewers give a toss about what was in The Sun last week, as is evidenced by the fact the ratings have stayed the same over the month (plus being up on last year from what Wozza20 posted)

It's a hybrid... You can't possibly tell me that The X Factor is purely about talent now are you? It's all about the drama behind the scenes and the arguments between the judges. It's reality tv, pure and simple.

Sure, but perception is important when it comes down to the press. But as I have said throughout this thread, BGT is safe, it's a broader show and as you have pointed out, it is a better produced show. TXF and it's performance is the one to look out for. The BBC have shown that there is an appetite for a purely talent orientated show, albeit as highly controlled by the producers as the x factor is! It blows Louis Walsh's argument that the British public love to see purely crap acts because it entertains them.

I agree. Putting two shows on over the weekend was a much better scheduling decision than weekly. Felt more like an event and got them out of the way in one go.

To be fair they've used the consolidated ITV/ITV HD/ITV +1 ratings like they do with the overnights. But this time they haven't said what BGT got without +1 as The Voice actually beat them.

Your quite right. Plus its been much better than X Factor (and backed up by The Voice - which shares better demos with BGT than Strictly with X Factor), but its just funny to see as X Factor will be the one more bigged up. (mind you its in a more profitable slot so you can understand why ITV back it more).


The Tulisa scandal was well dealt with by Tulisa herself except from what I hear some legal bods getting in fights over if she were behind the leak.

Generally Cowell has done okay, he seems odd and creepy but doesn't yet have the creepy uncle image yet. Which I think is lucky as if Dannii or Cheryl spoke out against him, he might be in trouble (also be glad this is during the auditions and NOT the live shows, where its more uncomfortable for him)


There not so much annoyed atm, they just know both these shows have things to talk about.
X Factor is the bigger problem, last year they were much much more venomous (after protecting it for a bit), and this was mostly down to the lack of stories they had to sell. The producers tried and failed. I've no doubt the press did not benefit as much last year as previous years. So attacking the show was the only way they could catch the national mood as there was just too many 'meh' contestants.

"Aggregated" = adding up the consolidated ratings of the first showing and one or more repeats, usually overlooking the repeat showings of the rival show you are comparing to - ie, desperate spin

The iPlayer figures quoted are the number of requests per episode. They don't tell us if the whole programme was watched and don't indicate the number of actual viewers watching a particular stream/download. BBC iStats (the internal data warehouse who collect the data) count all successful requests where a stream/download actually starts. They don't, however, count the number of “clicks” which can be repeated several times if the user does not see an immediate reaction.

'Pure and simple' is a little different from saying 'purely'.

Both The Sun and The Express have printed 9.9 for TV and 9.3 for BGT-with the Express also adding the 10.6 BGT and 11.6 TV peak figures. So I would guess that will be the guide for many, whatever level of interest they may have.

Good ratings, 2012 in line with 2009. 2010 was the season opener, hence why it was a bit higher. Qualifying will be approx ~3.4m, so a very good rating there.

The biggest test the hierarchy at X Factor have imo is their decisions on judges. They need at least one change, the show will be one nil down at the outset if they stick with the same line up.

Agree. Like the Claire Danes' Temple Grandin, this HBO movie was excellent.

I expect Julianne Moore to follow Danes with Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild wins.

Looking at BARB, I've noticed a couple of interesting things..

Firstly the 15/4 episode of Once Upon a Time rose 100k from the 8/4 episode, doesn't normally happen for the American Genre imports, normally the only way is down...

Secondly, the Voice beat BGT on the 14th, no matter how ITV try and spin it... and even when you include +1 there's a tiny difference...

Thirdly, the 15/4 episode of Silent Witness, beat all the episodes of Emmerdale that week... But they all bar two (unsure with the ITV1HD figures, possibly all of them) beat the 9/14 episode of Silent Witness...

Lastly, Sundays appear to be a massive night for multi channels, with 33.3% of the MC top 30 being shows from Sunday... compared to the low 3.3% of MC top 30 shows from Friday...

Maybe it's just me but I hate the way DS reports the ratings in recent weeks?

The pictures are far too big and break up the text while the multichannels have been split from the main article and worded in such a way that they often makes no sense.

I'd have to say that a big part of that is the Premier League football - i.e the main reason why Sky Sports customers fork out whatever it is per month.

Slightly confused why everyone thinks Silent Witness is doing badly. Last Monday, it's overnights were 4.63m while it achieved 6.09m yesterday! Official figures for this series so far are:

Average so far is: 7.28m

339k over three showings is very good. This sort of stuff will rarely get a commission from PSB channels and would only be available in fringe theatre.

To put the figures in context, it would fill The Donmar Warehouse for eight shows a week for more than three years!!

It's official! NBC are putting The Voice on in the autumn! Bad idea.

It depends. ABC did the same with Dancing With The Stars, one series in the spring, another in the 'fall'... Didn't seem to do it any harm. Although if Britney Spears is confirmed for TXF USA, then well... game on!

DWTS is a shorter run, though. September to November and March to May. There's also nothing else like it on TV. The Voice will be starting season 4 in February 2013, probably less than 2 months after it finished season 3. American Idol will have launched in January and X Factor will have also concluded in December.

Varietys article (below) suggests that the move depends on NBC's development slate (which doesn't look great, IMHO, given the number of hours they need to fill). They'll take lower ratings for The Voice in the hope that, not only will it do better than anything else they might find, it might help them launch new series. It is sheer desperation but you can see why they'd do it.

For FOX, I'm not sure what it means. I guess if they got Britney (and they'll surely re-double their efforts) then they can play up the old Britney/Christina battle. And the prospect of an already ailing Voice falling further would be appealing. But on the other hand, it might simply implode the whole US talent show market and send them all tumbling further.
