Which question? I'd say The X Factor is more of a talent show than reality, but it's a matter of opinion, I suppose. Just think the phrase 'reality tv' is thrown around without that much thought, that's all.

You will not be surprised to hear that on This Morning there was no mention of either The Cube or The Voice.

Instead Holly and Phil explained their exhausting TV weekends by saying the watched the marathon and Britain's Got Talent - followed by the usual 20 minute recap of BGT with Stephen Mulhearn and copious clips.

They did start soap week with an inspired East Enders item - though - featuring a real retired policewoman doing a Crimewatch feature - both filmed on the square and then live back in the studio showing 'CCTV footage'. They appealed for viewers to help search for the killers of Heather Trott and various other ex cast members back to Eddy Royal - and to appeal for informants to bang up one Philip Mitchell!

The police detective (who does real life crime appeals on the show in other weeks) also commented that the ineptitude of the fictional one on East Enders was at fault for Phil Mitchell still being at large.

I know its more complex now The Voice and The Cube are against one another, but Holly is now one of the faces of The Voice.

She leads the show. ITV should be using that fact to make This Morning the go to place for the gossip/chat (especially since BBC have no spin-off show) about it, and what Holly thought.

We've already commented on the fact BGT and The Voice boost one another, ITV should stop being childish and learn to take advantage of the situation.

Fact is it'll look stupid and viewers will want to hear about The Voice from Holly. Daft.
They don't need to talk ratings, just 'what did you think of this?' etc.

In Scotland a Scottish affairs show is shown, Scotland Tonight, then The Agenda.

From the news figures we've seen before, this works brilliantly for ITV.
Its past time BBC did the same as honestly it is affecting things. Add to all this the fact one is BBC Two and the other is ITV1 and tbh The Guardian is being slightly unfair. Not to mention one is led into directly by the news and is only a weekly review on a leading channel, the others is nightly on a secondary channel

And PS: Scotland Tonight is daily as well, again skewing things.
PSS: Does anyone have ratings for Scotland Tonight? As I do think the 'regional first' is a better way to do things, especially in Scotland (Newsnight especially could be swapped, except in special circumstances)


But hats must be taken off for ITV giving such attention to the news coverage on their main coverage.

It is daft, if I were a guest I would probably be tempted to ask Holly how she is getting on with The Voice. Though maybe not Phil with The Cube-now that would be embarrassing.

UTV also have UTV Live Tonight at 10.30pm. Some ratings did get posted one week. UTV significantly outperformed the ITV1 share (nearly double ITV1 IIRC) and STV underperfomed

I agree - it seems any show involving the public is now dubbed "reality". Heck, I even saw Frozen Planet highlighted as one of the highlights of the week on a US reality site last week.

My definition of "reality TV" is based around shows like Big Brother and Survivor - so basically putting a group of people together in a controlled environment where they're filmed 24/7 and may or may not compete for a prize.

When I mentioned about reality tv shows becoming popular in the last decade, I was quickly told by someone on this forum, that reality tv shows have been around longer than that and gave Opportunity Knocks as an example. Was that a talent show or reality show?

Also, I didn't want to like the Voice UK but have to admit that after watching the battle rounds, I am now really into it. Looking forward to the live shows now

That's how each episode has rated in the officials. Now it maybe down, but those in my opinion are still very good figures. It got 8.05 w/e 15 Apr 2012 and that is not a bad figure.

And considering that it was originally a poky little BBC Two show rating 2-3 million,I think it is doing very well. It will never be a super hit but it is a good performer.

The Apprentice is a case like X Factor last year, a mega year with a host of characters to a more normal event.

Unlike X Factor I don't think it has any serious problems however and those are some strong figures, and outside of maybe wanting a few better characters - generally I think the audience is enjoying it.

So I agree, those are fantastic figures, just not on the same level as last year.
And likely does well on iplayer (history shows it has - and it seems to chart well).

Well The Apprentice attracts a different sort of demographic to that of TXF any ways. Generally more mature. So they can get away with quieter years as the audience wouldn't mind it.

Opportunity Knocks, New Faces and Search for a Star( the BBC rival) were talent shows. BGT is a talent show as basically it is turns peforming in front of a panel of judges hoping to get to the next round. TXF is a bit more like a reality show as there is the boot camp, but this is only a part of it and it is a talent/ reality hybrid.

It was a talent show. The term "reality TV" didn't exist in those days (ITV 1964-1978, BBC1 1987-1990).

Goes to show how Petty ITV really are....The BBC has still mentioned BGT and yesterday during Radio1's Chart show it was mentioned 3 or 4 times

The BBC should now just be as childish as ITV and Ban all BGT/Cowell chat on any of their shows across TV and Radio

To be fair, it'd probably quite awkward for Phil to natter about The Voice while the show Holly left so she could film it had a bad winter and his own show is at axe level. But yes, why not make him promote the show that's lost him his co-presenter and possibly another gig?

Plus, image wise it won't look good if ITV suddenly start talking about The Voice. If they dare to say anything critical they'd be hung, drawn and quartered for starters.

And what happens if The Voice grows further after ITV start talking about it and Britain's Got Talent's figures look embarrassing next to it? ITV have scored enough own goals in their time without adding this to the list.

It's best for them if they stay clear of it entirely then enter the pitfalls of promotion.

The more I think about ITV complaining about The Voice over-running on Saturday night, the more I think "Bloody cheek, ITV".

It was ITV that decided to bring BGT forward four weeks to take it on The Voice.

When BBC1 scheduled TVUK for 7.15, ITV schedule BGT at 7.45.

When BBC1 moved TVUK to 7pm, ITV moved BGT to 7.30.

They they moved BGT to 8pm creating the 20 minute overlap (which anyone with half a brain could have told them they would lose)

And then when they finally move BGT to a later slot - for ITV's benefit, not hthe viewers - they expect the BBC to kowtow to them.

BBC1, you should have stuck with your 100 minute programmes and told ITV to go ***** themselves.


Incidentally, tonight on BBC3 they're repeating Saturday's episode of The Voice. It's down in the Radio Times to run from 7.30pm to 9pm, but on the Sky EPG it starts at 7.25.

Bloody hell they don't have to tell everyone to tune into BBC1 Saturdays at 7:00PM but a little mention here and there wouldn't go amiss.

She's terrible on This Morning and was Terrible on DOI but seems to work much better with Reggie on that Huge Hit on BBC1

I think Phil is crap anyway. He's rubbish at LIVE TV and i guess im going to have to watch him try to be funny during the Soap Awards too:sleep:

They're also finishing it four weeks early so they can fit in Soccer Aid. Also, Stephen Mulhern said in January that Britain's Got Talent would return in March. It wasn't a last minute move.


The best hours for any show is 7-9. Why the two channels can't compromise so one takes the 7pm hour and one the 8pm hour is anyone's guess.


I think George Dixon must schedule for ITV1 as well.


Hardly - but if the BBC can't even fit a pre-recorded episode of The Voice into the timeslot, goodness knows how they're going to manage with the live shows.


Admittedly ITV moved Britain's Got Talent to suit themselves, but it actually hurt the channel IMO as it finished too late. They also gave BBC One 150 minutes of primetime (if you take primetime as the BBC's reading of it: 6.00-10.30) to fit in a ninety minute show before Britain's Got Talent. The BBC still couldn't do it despite that.


What show are they showing at 7pm? Is that being cut so The Voice can start on time or is The Voice going to start late and run over it's allotted time...again.

There's more reasons than Phil Schofield's ego not to mention The Voice, as I mentioned in the OP.

Remember, it's not just Britain's Got Talent, The Cube, Vera, Family Fortunes et al that The Voice is hurting. The X Factor is going to find this series much harder than it would have done without the opposition. The X Factor is ITV1's prize possession, simply because of the demo it attracts. It's relatively safe to talk about Strictly because it attracts a difference kind of audience and press attention to The X Factor, but The Voice is vying for the same space.

What I'm trying to say is, while it looks petty, there are more reasons than one behind ITV's silence on The Voice.

Just to clarify, BGT really wasn't moved forwards 3 weeks at the last minute to take on The Voice. It was moved forwards because ITV have live football on 3 consecutive Saturday nights (19th, 26th, 2nd) after the BGT Final, and with Soccer Aid taking Sunday 27th it would be impossible to fit BGT into its normal schedule, so they brought it forwards 3 weeks. Various people involved with the show were saying it would be on air in 'late March' as early as January.

And even if they had made the move purely to start on the same night as The Voice I don't see what difference it would have made as they'd still have been airing on the same night as each other had BGT stuck to its normal weeks, except The Voice would have had a 3 week headstart, putting ITV on the backfoot.
