That's a bit unfair. There was no "story" about the TV coverage last year, because there was no issue about the rights. My comments were in the context of it being the Beeb's final race and the end of 50 odd years of unbroken coverage.

As an F1 and Motorsport fan who has seen people die I'm afraid a hose doesn't effect me as much.

An article discussing why 'Person of Interest' is set to become the next power hit in American television:

“Last week, in anticipation of NCIS’ 200th episode, I wrote an article titled “NCIS: The Making of a Ratings Powerhouse” where I explored some of the key reasons why the crime drama is so popular and becoming increasingly popular with age. You can read it here. I made the comment that “no other scripted show comes even close” but given the latest ratings trend of CBS’ Person of Interest, I think that assessment may have been premature.

For the most part, the ratings of the majority of new shows follow a similar pattern: the initial premiere scores high, drops in the coming weeks, and then eventually stabilizes as the show finds its stable group of viewers. Lets look at Unforgettable and Person of Interest, two of CBS’s biggest hits this season. Unforgettable debuted close to 14 million viewers, but just like in the predictable pattern, its ratings have dropped to 11 million viewers on average. On the other hand, Person of Interest debuted with 13.22 million viewers, and instead of following the pattern and stabilizing to a lower number, its ratings have only gone up. Two weeks ago, episode 1.13 “Root Cause” pulled in 14.94 million viewers, and this past week, it hit a series high with 15.14 million viewers. While a handful of other shows, like The Big Bang Theory (16 million viewers on average) currently outrank Person of Interest, keep in mind that these shows are veterans, have been on the air for several years, and have already established their stable viewer pools. If Person of Interest’s ratings continue their current trend, it won’t be long before the new show surpasses even the big hitters like NCIS: Los Angeles and The Big Bang Theory.

To make a fair comparison with NCIS, I looked up NCIS’ historical ratings. While NCIS may be a ratings monster today, it wasn’t always that way. Below are the average numbers for the show’s first six seasons:

Note that it wasn’t even until the 3rd season that NCIS broke 15 million viewers, and Person of Interest has already done that halfway through its first season. That’s pretty impressive for a show that has aired only 14 episodes thus far.

So, why is Person of Interest becoming so popular, and why should we believe that the new hit drama might be the next NCIS? If you read my NCIS:Powerhouse article, the biggest reason I give for NCIS’ explosive success is the superb writing and most notably, its character development. NCIS’ stories aren’t spectacular and its entire premise is nothing to write home about. People don’t tune in for the stories – instead, they tune in to connect with their favorite characters. I see the same thing with Person of Interest. While watching Finch (Michael Emerson) and Reese (Jim Caviezel) work to stop the murder of each person-of-interest is interesting, I think the main draw of the show is the characters. You only have to look online at some of the forums to know that viewers are clamoring to learn more about these mysterious characters. Why has Finch been leading a double life for 35+ years? Why is he so paranoid? What happened to Reese that was so bad that he can’t trust anyone? Don’t expect these questions to be answered anytime soon, but even for just a small bit of information, viewers are flocking in.

However, Person of Interest does have one other thing going for it besides character development, and the one big thing that NCIS does not: a very unique, original storyline. NCIS’ premise is the investigation into murders of Marines or sometimes other government officials. Okay. A little bit of a spin on other shows like CSI and Law & Order but nothing very different. With Person of Interest, you have two vigilantes trying to stop a future murder predicted by a Machine built by a reclusive billionaire software genius. Which do you think is more original and interesting?

With this winning combination of excellent character development and original storyline, I have very little doubt that Person of Interest is well on its way to being CBS’ next big mega-hit. How long it will take to get there, I don’t know, but if its current ratings trend is any indicator, it may not be that long.

I agree, however as we know from most sports, they tend to go with who pays them the most money, not which gives them the biggest audience. That mindset is about profit, not sport, and certainly not an event of national importance.

the sad (but true thing) is that the X-Factor finale, is as much an event of national importance, as who will win a sporting event, it gets over 10 million viewers, and has endless press attention, which sport can boost that these days?

Dont get me wrong I dont like that, that is the case, im betting amongst certain demographics the X-Factor finale, is far more important than who will win some horse race, they probably couldn't even name any previous winners, but can name all the previous winners of X-Factor.

but again, those drivers are human, and its not common to loose two drivers in a race, yet alone 2, 2 years running. Are there any stats on how many horses died, at the National over the years?

I dont see how people who claim to love their animals, can take part in event where its a known factor some of them will die.

You make very good point's.

X-Factor may get 10 million plus. But will it be getting that in 50 years. Sport unlike TV shows does not generally become stale.

The old Real BBC got it's audiences through big events. This sad version off the BBC we have now does it through expensive entertainment shows.

You know what channel I'd like it to end up on, right?

Seriously, I do think it would suit C5 more than any other channel. We were saying as much on here last year when news of the shows picked up for this season were first announced. Given how long it's taking though I could see it ending up on a digital channel first, as with NCIS.

We probably shouldn't be too surprised that Person of Interest did not impress enough at the upfronts to get an immediate pickup. It does seem to be one of those shows that maybe isn't instantly loved but rather one that people grow attached to over time. Its premiere numbers whilst big were nothing special, but its performance since then most definitely has been, and whichever UK broadcaster is lucky enough to have secured the rights will be licking their lips at the trend.

fair enough, however X-Factor has had some sticking power, and even if its not around in 20 years time, it may (will) still have stopped a generation paying attention to these kinds of sporting events, when X-Factor does end, there is nothing to say those people will turn once again to events like the National.

All that said, I will never be judged a defender of sport in general, be it on the BBC, C4 or Sky,. so maybe my opinion is bias.

the fact the BBC wont be carrying this event, may mean very little to many.

What will be interesting next year is not the ratings, it will be if there is any major difference in betting.

your talk of "the real BBC" belongs to a bygone age, when the TV market was different to how it is now. the BBC will do itself no favours trying to pretend that its still that era.

The loss of The Grand National is a very big thing for BBC Sport as they have been carrying this race for over 50 years and it does well for them. Will Channel 4 get the same peaks for their coverage? We'll see. But why a prgramme can be on BBC1/ITV and get big ratings then move to BBC2/Channel 4 and get smaller ratings has always puzzled me!

Programmes just have to move from BBC One to ITV1 to see a drop. Look at the difference in simulcast events; people automatically tune into BBC One.

Also, if an event moves from BBC One it means BBC One is airing something else which would draw in more viewers than BBC Two/Channel Four opposition against a BBC One event, if that makes sense.

Why put a panel show up against a very successful panel show on a more popular channel if you don't have to? Makes precisely no sense.

The last time they tried this back in November 2011, 8 out of 10 Cats managed a lousy 750k (3.1%) vs a hefty 4.23m (17.3%) for Have I Got News For You.

George Dixon is Channel 4's current scheduler, isn't he? Enough said.

It'd make more sense to air 8 Out of 10 Cats at 9.30pm and try to pull the Have I Got News For You audience across - there's already a 1m+ audience floating around after Have I Got News For You after all.

you are not 100% wrong, however that isnt going to change anytime soon. Also as I said, its the sports who are putting short term profits first, ahead of some notion of being a genuine national event.

I was only saying last night that the F1 organisers will give a race to anyone who gives them enough money, no matter what else is happening in that country at the time. This kind of appearance doesn't do any sport any favours.

Share wise the first Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders did ok. The second Coronation Street seems low; presumably hit by Would I Lie To You. The tea time soaps are being hurt by the nice weather figure wise.

Talking of nicer weather, this is the first time I can remember where The Voice has encountered a decent day countrywise; will this cause a dip in the figures? Something tells me it has enough momentum now to not be bothered by it.

They deliberately did that for continuity purposes. So contestants auditioning on the first day of the process could be shown in the last episode or the other way around etc.

Just a slight correction - two stewards have died during a Formula One race since then; Paolo Ghislimberti during the 2000 Italian Grand Prix and Graham Beveridge during the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.
