Amps and headphones

Hi,

Why is that you have to turn the volume up (and on my amp quite a bit) when using headphones? Baring in mind they're crap heasdphones, but the amp is pretty reasonable - isn't it something to do with impedance or something?

Cheers

Yes - it's to protect your hearing and stop you from going deaf...

Uh-hu, but surely with say really crappy headphones and amp you'll get to a stage where you have to turn the amp up so much - do you ever get that?

And shouldn't you buy the correct "ohms-age" for the equipment you are using?

A little bit off topic. Does anyone know if there's a decoder/headphone amp available? I don't want a full home cinema with speakers so just decoder/headphone amp feeding surround sound headphones would be great.

depends on the sensitivity of your headphone coils, Sennheissers I own, for example, produce awesome sound, but aren't extremely loud.

Thanks for that, just what I was looking for. The Pioneer is just under £300 (to much for me), the Sony is £145. I may well go for the Sony but will do a bit more research first.

Where have you found the Sony's for at £145?

Have been looking at online prices for the Pioneer's in the USA...

http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_17649.html There is £8 postage on top of that though and I've just noticed they're temporarily out of stock.

Further search £137 http://www.nomatica.com/index.asp?De...pricerunner_uk not sure about postage here.

EDIT. looking at some of the feedback nomatica site doesn't look so good.
