I recognised her in T2 when I saw that, but had no idea she was in Titanic when I first watched it in 1997. But noticed when I saw it for the second time on Friday though. I was like WTF
She looked really odd as a lady who is of obvious Latino decent with Freckles and a red hair dye and an Irish accent!!!!
I don't think she is , she just played it that way in Aliens .

both different animals and both on par, though if I am honest, aliens probably beats by a small margin but they are both exceptional

I am kinda stunned at the poster, who described Aliens as a trite popcorn film

what film was he watching ??????

so much better than that by miles

and as for the dialogue, it is Cameron weakness but the dialogue, in Aliens is just fine and dandy and there are plenty of great one liners, Titanic, The Abyss, Avatar come to mind with regards to dialogue but Aliens, works just fine

if you read the biography of Mr Cameron you will note that he acknowledges that sometimes he struggles with dialogue and that is not always his strongest point

She is a normal American woman. She dressed up as a Latino woman to try and help her get the part in Aliens when she auditioned. She misunderstood the title of the film (thinking it was a film about Mexicans in America rather than a sequel to Alien). James Cameron thought that was hilarious and gave her the role.

In Aliens, the line spoken by Bill Paxton of "Somebody said 'alien', she thought they meant 'illegal alien' and signed up!" is an in-joke amongst the cast and crew of the film.

She's also in Near Dark, the vampire film, along with Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton.

How does casting work for films? Would someone have seen them in Aliens and thought they worked well together, or could one of them have been offered a part and they suggested the others?

I agree with the comments that Alien and Aliens are two very different films. I like them both.

I've always assumed that James Cameron tries to pick actors that he's worked with before.

Michael Biehn was in everything he did at one point.

Near Dark was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, it was the year after Aliens. I assumed that they had been cast as a result of being on Aliens, but wondered how it could have come about.

Michael Biehn would of been in Avatar apparently but Cameron opted for Stephen Lang in the end as he didn't want people labelling him and Sigourney, Hicks and Ripley in another sci-fi movie.

Alien is an iconic moment in cinema history, probably most people would have said dont attempt to follow it, leave it alone. Aliens does follow it and performs a miracle in matching it, albeit from a different pespective. I can still remember coming out of the cinema back way back then pretty gobsmacked at what I had seen.
Aliens stands the test of time and is still a fabulous white knuckle ride viewing it today.

I thought that Aliens was a good film but I tried watching it again the other day and I thought it was awful. It looked really dated, some of the acting was awful, and it was full of bad editing and gaffs. It was a good genre film for its time but it's not a classic.

Watched Prometheus the other night, which I really enjoyed, so bought the Alien boxset. I know this is an unpopular opinion on this thread, but I much prefer Alien. I watched it last night and was hooked; some genuinely scary moments. I'm currently watching Aliens and struggling to stay interested! I'm struggling to follow what's going on!

A lot of people agree with you. They are two separate types of film. One is more atmosperic horror, the other atmospheric action. Both movies are highly regarded but which you prefer depends on your tastes.

I must say I'm starting to enjoy it, it's just got a completely different tone and feel to it. But for some reason it feels a lot cheaper, as if it has aged badly!

Don't like the Director's Cut, on 4 now. Original is much faster and exciting.

Having rewatched both films over the past few days I would say I personally prefer Alien. Somehow bits of Aliens look really cheap.

(Love - Love - Love (yes really) - Like - not really paid attention to)

Not quite, Near Dark was 87, they married in 89.

No idea if they were already together in 87 though.

Both differently brilliant.

Alien - a genre defining cult movie based on horror/tension.

Aliens - an all out actioner.

Akin to Terminator/Terminator 2 I'd say.

If T2 is on soon then I'll have enjoyed all 4 in the last couple of weeks. Movies that are watchable over and over again must be doing something right.

I was searching yesterday to see if Ridley Scott had ever given his view on 'Aliens' and vise versa but couldn't find anything.

Does anybody know if either has ever spoken about the other's movie? I'd be interested to know what they had to say.

I did find Ridley's view on AVP.

I did read that he said, "it was not the sequel he would have made" and he spoke to Cameron and basically said, what you made, was a shoot em up and Cameron agreed

but, don't recall anything else

(Only seen Titanic once, never again so can't comment on that).
And the cop blown up on the diving board in Lethal weapon 2 I think.
