Connecting GPS receiver to wifi iPad.
Being reading up on connecting a GPS reciver to an iPad (I have the new one if there is difference) and looking at some sites they seem to suggest you need to jailbreak and others don't mention it. Rather confused so I have come to seek guidance from the wisdom of DS gurus.

AFAIK, the only official way to get GPS on a WiFi iPad is to tether the iPad to an iPhone, and it will share the GPS data.
The other way is some Bluetooth GPS receivers work and can paired. (Usually you have to install a free app). http://www.tuaw.com/2011/05/08/getti...-with-new-sky/ |

I was looking at GPS adapters and came across this one made by a company called Dual: http://xgps150.dualav.com/
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be many shops that sell it in this country (as it comes from the USA), but I did find Expansys sell them for £75.99 http://www.expansys.com/dual-univers...=base&ito=1701 It can be used on most iPad navigation apps without jailbraking as well as with other blue tooth devices too such as a laptop or to improve the GPS of a mobile phone. |

Google Maps works off-line by caching your route while connected.
And there are plenty of free non navigation maps. There are hints from that link that a standard bluetooth GPS connection is banned. Thus the need for a Jailbreak in order to install a utility app. |

Google don't license their map data for turn by turn use on iOS, which is why developers need to provide their own maps.
There are a handful of Apple approved bluetooth GPS units that work out of the box, so to speak, but they're at the higher end of the market. |

So, have I understood this right. I'd need a Bluetooth GOS reciver, any in theory would do ? App on the iPad to 'work with' the GPS reciver and then navigation software ?

You should check for iPad compatibility. The cheapo ones don't normally work with it.
In theory

It is annoying that ANY Bluetooth GPS just won't work, as standard, with any iPad! |

If having a GPS receiver is important to you, why didnt you buy a 3G version or an android tablet?
