Used an iPhone for almost 4 years. Just switched to a Nokia running 7.5. It's miles ahead in respect to a good user experience. Loving it.

I do find the lack of apps a little disappointing. Also my major gripe is the lack of a one stop backup. I can't find anyway to backup the SMS or call logs. I don't think Microsofts own programme backs up SMS.

It's a Nokia Lumina 710 which I got for £120 from CPW. Was more of a stop gap, but I reckon I will stick with it. Can't see myself going back to ios

The Lumia 900 (with same processor, RAM etc as the 800) versus a Galaxy Nexus, one of the best Android currently for sale. A lot of the time the Lumia was faster.

I currently use a Galaxy S2, fantastic phone but my lad's HD7 impresses me too and when a W8 phone is launched that matches/beats the S2 I'll buy one; I intend to upgrade my PC's to W8 anyway so may as well use a phone on 8 as well.

Thinking of buying my wife the 710. Does anyone know if it will be upgraded to W8 when it's launched?

There's really been no information of upgradability of current handsets. For 7.5 windows phones you can expect to get new features added on if not win8.

For real future proofing you need to wait for win8 devices. If you can't wait then buy now knowing there is a risk. Generally budget androids (the competition to the 710) have poor upgradability (official updates that is). The iOS competition is the 3GS and I doubt Apple will allow that to get the next version of iOS.

If you can wait for Nokia 610, it will very likely come with the Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh a.k.a. Tango and you will have a higher probability of updating it to W8 later on. Nothing is 100% though. I'd say it will be possible to update to W8 at least the handsets that came with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Tango for Mango handsets should be available in April/May according to rumours.

Been using lumia 800 and switched back to my iPhone 4. biggest problems for me were:

1. battery life - even with latest fix, still very poor cannot last a day
2. camera is not as good as i was hoping for
3. multitasking and other UI incosistencies
4. internet explorer is not good
5. missing a lot of the features

so overall i wouldn't recommend it over iPhone.

Sorry, Ivan but I think that's bad advice. The 610 is an even more budget phone than the 710 with half the RAM etc. The 710 has the same internals as the 800 and 900 so all those three will get it or none I would imagine.

Most people's worry is that Win8 will be demanding software and will need dual-core processors. The 610 with the worst hardware has the least chance of being upgraded.

The OLED screen is top end whilst for many dual core is not needed.Lack of fart apps is no problem is the main non fart ones all appear.

Lack of HDMI, USB host and other memory expansion seems plain weird.


It does make one question what exactly top end phones(in pricing) are for.

Oops, I did not know that about 610, I only knew it's coming together with Lumia 900... I think that video that compares Lumia 900 and Galaxy Nexus shows nicely how important is a dual and more core processor. If there are no intensive parallel tasks running it's about how optimised is the code and Android clearly isn't. BTW there are rumours that W8 phones will have SD card slot.

Well the idea is that if the Windows 8 codebase is "heavier" it will need more RAM at least and if they allow full-on background processing like on Android, then dual-core would probably be a good idea.

At the moment, they've designed the software to be light and battery efficient so the single core has been fine.

^^^ Not official though. No upgrade path may mean, you could install it, but it would reset the phone to initial state losing media, apps etc that were installed on the phone. That would make sense to me, because if the OSs differ too much it would mean too many complications to try to migrate the state of the phone to the new OS.

It's basically as good as gold now...Paul Thurrott has confirmed it too and he knows a lot about WP8 although he won't say until he's allowed to.

Very disappointing news. I might buy a WP8 phone or stick with my Lumia 800, as long as it gets tethering, I'm fairly happy with it (save screen resolution and battery life).

If the reports of the transition from the CE to the NT kernel are true (and I believe they are) then I'm not surprised that existing phones cannot be upgraded. I got my Lumia 800 knowing this might be the case so I can't be too disappointed.

However, I do hope that there will be an update to the WP 7.X line to make existing phones compatible with most WP8 apps. With silverlight being sidelined and app developers being encouraged to use native code or whatever, it will be incredibly frustrating to find that in a year or so most new apps wont be compatible at all with my phone. That is something that no other modern phone platform has seen.

So not getting a full upgrade WP8 wont put me off getting another WP phone in future - but leaving me high and dry with absolutely no app compatibility down the line will.

You have to wonder what way this will effect sales on the Lumia 900 its not even out in the UK yet and will be out of date if a few months, even android can do better than this with all the updates it has.

I wasn't planning to buy Lumia 900, but yes, not a very wise decision from MS, if it is really so.

Never seen one, so i don't really know what one will be like, but i have seen reviews and read forums where people have got one.
I can see some advantages and some disadvantages with them, sadly i still remember my one and only windows phone.


The other problem is that I use windows here at home on my main computer and while it is better now than a few years back it is still not prefect and I really don't want to be making a phone call and it comes up with the phone version of the blue screen of death.

Another problem it looks like Windows 8 metro, which I hate with a vengeance. If I got for another smart phone it will have to be another HTC and Android, i like HTC android phones, i know mine is a bit slow now and again, but you get what you pay for, but it have never crashed or failed on me.
