It makes sense forTalkTalk to offer this service as all its key competitors have a TV offering which helps client retention and it is lacking here. There will be an upfront cost of buying or subsidising the hardware but as well as better client retention rates, TalkTalk may be able to make money through on-demand services and possible linear channels as per its current offering.
This triple play stuff makes people think they are getting something for nothing, but they don't.

Look at how the broadband and phone market have combined, even BT now you can't get broadband without going for their phone service.

How long will it be before people are forced to have their TV service?

I have said years ago all I want is aces to the net, simple as, no silly gimmicks, such as Talk Talk so called home safe and Bt so called net protect.

I want to be able to choose where to get my phone and broadband from and not pay stupid prices because I refuse to be like other people and need all my services combined.

My broadband at the moment is a pretty good price, sure it is not TT or sky cheap, but it is a pretty good price for a decent service, my phone service is also a good price, but from a separate company. But if I went for fibre, unless I go with one of the large ISps, sky, talk Talk or BT, i have to pay a high connection fee and then compared to the big three a high monthly fee and then it is limited, just because I don't want to be a sheep and follow everyone else.

i don't even watch TV, so I certainly would not want You view or any other TV service, so I say again how long will it be before the big three start forcing people to have their T.V services?

i know sky went away from that to get more customers, but if Bt and Talk Talk start doing it , Sky will do it again.

the whole system is wrong.

You'd be ill advised to believe any Youview dates now. Still, since I only just switched to BT Infinity on a 12 month contract, there does seem to be a good chance that I'll have a choice of Youview options by the time my lock-in expires - most likely I'll be able to get Talk Talk fibre to cabinet broadband plus their Youview for less than I currently pay BT for just broadband, lets see.

That article's source is exactly the same as mine - TalkTalk's annual results. They have no more information and have just chosen to speculate that it will be the last month of the quarter - September rather than July or August. I appreciate with YouView's track record this is a good bet but we could still see them before September!

FT: YouView trials enter final stage

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/a43fbde8-a...#axzz1w78fdS7m

Trials with 350 members of the public to start this week. Previous triallists have been staff or staff of shareholding companies. If no problems larger-scale trials will rapidly commence.

Cost if not bought from an ISP likely to be c£200.

YouView office has relocated from the offices of one shareholder - BBC - to another shareholder - Northern & Shell (Channel 5, Daily Express) for reasons of more space and cost.

YouView will NOT be built inside TVs, as already announced on the Internet, you will have to google it, as I cannot remember where I saw it

I find most of the things that Recombu.com publish is rubbish because I have found out that what they publish is not true at all

YouView website www.youview.com is a bit out of date by nearly a year now, but it gives you the right facts though

Recombu is a credible source. Today it even revealed details, a price and a photo of the first YouView box. This was sourced back to a John Lewis catalogue. To allege "I have found out what they publish is not true at all" is not something I would like anyone have to defend in court.

Like you, I have been unable to find anything online that supports the suggestion that YouView would not welcome non-PVR devices. Commonsense alone suggests it would be foolish for YouView to never say never to its platform being used on non-PVR devices.

However, as to whether TV manufacturers with their own smart TV platforms would be keen to adopt the YouView platform is a different matter altogether.

Wonder if they will enforce the right to take the box back at the end of the trial, it'll be a bummer if we get chosen, family love it and then we are told to send it back.

Have people been on other trials, do they always ask you to send it back ?

With pleasure! But you won't be able to tell us if you have been successful and what the trial is like... (T&Cs)

If YouView decides not to exercise or enforce any right that it has against you at a particular time, then this does not prevent YouView from later deciding to exercise orenforce that right.
They also reserve the right not to enforce their rights, so they don't have to take the boxes back. Am I too hopeful ?

If we assume the boxes cost £100 for YouView to buy and there's 5,000* people trialling the service that's a not insubstantial cost of £500,000. If you were YouView would you write this off as a cost of the trials or attempt to get some of it back say by charging triallists £75 each? If you try and charge you may end up with lots of returned boxes and people declining to return them. What would you do?

(*A YouView spokesman was quoted in the FT at the end of May saying If the tests by YouViews' shareholders staff were successful which they appear to be, thousands more YouView boxes could make their way into homes of the general public as soon as four weeks.)

They could of course offer to sell it to the triallist at a discounted price.

If you consider the fact that they have to pay a courier to collect, then refurbish and repackage the unit before only being able to sell it at a second hand price it's probably the better way to minimise their expenditure on the trial.

If I were them yes, I'd offer the boxes at cost after the trial, the £75 mentioned above seems about the right mark. We have to get picked first though.

Has anyone received the follow-up survey yet?

I registered on Wednesday night and got a confirmation email straight away that told me to look out for a survey from SPA, but so far I've received nothing
