New Keane Single - Opinions?
Keane's new single 'Silenced By the Night' is out today, just wondering what everyone makes of it?
I really like it, but I listened to another of their new songs called 'Disconnected', which I could only find live versions of, and I think that is probably a better song. I read on Wikipedia 'Disconnected' was going to be the first single in the UK but evidently not! If anyone hasn't heard the single it's on YouTube

It's quite catchy but nothing new. Maybe it'll grow on me I don't know but, it just sounds exactly the same as everything they've ever done.

Just listened to it. I love it. Verses are better than the chorus though, IMO. Overall a lovely song that makes me feel all warm inside
Good to hear Keane again.

@ Bagpipes - I agree, the verses are better than the chorus, but I think it's a grower

One of the worst bands in the world. And it may be just me, but the riff sounds abit like Oasis - Supersonic when they get to the part of "My friend said he'd take you home"

Not too keen on the single but there's some surprisingly good stuff on the album.
'Watch How You Go' and 'Neon River' are particularly fine. |

I feel sorry for Keane. I think they set off hoping to be the next Radiohead, but they quickly became even less cool than Coldplay.

The frontman seems quite likeable, just the music that's abit... well, sissy.
The whole concept of piano rock is a bit wussy though, isn't it? |

At last, something that might compete with Adele then.

I honestly don't know anyone who owns up to liking them. I think Tom's an entirely versatile singer, just hear him hammer out this Queen number, practically note for note http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMnMBSUJ0xU |

Not crazy about this but kudos to them. They're one of those bands who don't get the accolades they deserve because they don't do the celebrity circuit and eschew living off made up stories from inventive PR teams, instead preferring to let the singing and songwriting speak for themselves.
Hopes and Fears is a great album but I would never have known that if my sister hadn't bought me the album... |

I honestly don't know anyone who owns up to liking them. I honestly don't know anyone who owns up to liking them. I remember when they came on the scene they were seen as a watered down Coldplay, while Coldplay were seen as a watered down Radiohead. The whole concept of piano rock is a bit wussy though, isn't it? [/quote] I see a theme in your posts - someone who is very worried about what is 'cool' and 'masculine'. People can like what they like and not what they don't but baseless nonsense like what is and isn't cool and branding a particular instrument 'wussy' are not intelligent views. Quote:

I am curious though, can you link to any two or three Keane songs which you consider to be the same? Because I am a musician and to me the albums all have their own tone and each song a distinct chord pattern and melody - though it is true that many of the songs follow a standard structure, but Keane are not the only ones who are comfortable doing this. It is easy to see why they are popular; they write their own songs (have even won an Ivor Novello award) play their own instruments - drums, guitars, keyboards, pianos and synths. they have an exceptional vocalist with great pure voice and range and they don't put on an act or try to be something they are not. To me a well played tune, a well sung song with a melody that is catchy or emotional in some way makes me like it. Keane are good at this. |
