I don't. In order to be considered a great group you must produce great music and be loved long after you stop creating great music. Whether or not fans can name all band members is irrelevant.
Incidentally, I would still include the bands you have named in the great group category ![]() Obviously I am no youngster, and I would have no chance with modern groups like Killers, Stereophonics, Radiohead and the like.(They probably are not modern any more, are they?)

Greatest in what sense? Record sales?
For me there are two requirements: Record sales (because it is popular music after all and for better or for worse that's what it's about). Talent (because it does matter). For me to consider a group or artist to be great they have to have sold a lot of records. Truly great groups continue selling after they have split up. They also have to be more than just a stage act. They should write their own material and if they produce it even better. So on that basis I'd like to add: Abba. The BeeGees. Neil Diamond. But I'd like to add that I don't claim to just listen to great artists. Far from it. So I'll state that my definition of 'bad' music is music that hardly anyone ever buys. Everything else is good music. |
