Is auto-detect of input devices possible on Sony Bravia
CPU
17-04-2012
I have connected to my Sony KDL-32EX724 two DVD players, one via SCART and one via HDMI. I find that when I'm playing DVDs, it does not automatically pick up which player is playing (and I turn them off if I'm not using), but I need to go into the on-screen menus to do this. (The remote does have a shortcut key for this.)

My previous TV would automatically detect which input device was connected (all via SCART) and display accordingly. Is it possible to configure the Bravia to do the same?

It'll detect via SCART, but via HDMI you need a CEC enabled player (which would probably need to be BluRay?).

Thanks for the info. Neither DVD player is BluRay, that's something on my shopping list for the future.

Not in my experience, but maybe it depends on the signal type offered via Scart (S-Video vs RGB, etc).

There are two switching signals on SCART, pin 8 for main switching, and pin 16 for RGB switching - both work flawlessly, and I've probably connected thousands of sets in this way.

If you can't get them to work, you're doing something wrong?.

Do you mean that it would detect between different devices attached via SCART, or that it would switch to SCART (from HDMI) if it detected an incoming signal on the SCART device?

When you press Play on the DVD (or VCR) pin 8 of the SCART socket is set high (plus pin 16 if RGB is turned on). This forces the TV to switch to that SCART socket - and usually, when the player is turned off, the TV will revert to the previous input.

If you've got multiple SCART sockets on a TV, each successive activated one will over-ride the previous one. This is obviously what you want it to do, as you wouldn't be pressing play on your DVD if you didn't want to watch it.

So it switches between SCART devices (worked fine on my previous set) but not from HDMI to SCART (at least it doesn't on my new set). Obviosuly it's no biggy, I was just wondering.

Note quite sure how much margin for error there is: connect DVD player from SCART out to SCART in using SCART cable. I may be wrong, but thought I could manage that, just about.

Anyways, it doesn't matter. Auto-switching would be nice, but I don't mind the manual switch once a month or so.

Duff SCART lead?, SCART switching turned OFF on the DVD player (assuming that's an option). Faulty TV?, faulty DVD player?.
