Why are some people so obsessed by celebrities sexuality?

I understand being naturally curious, but some people seem completely obsessed with "outing" celebs - like Simon Cowell - and I just don't understand why! It makes no difference to our lives whatsoever if a celeb is gay, straight, bi, asexual, whatever!! Can anyone let me in on what's so fascinating about spending thread after thread, post after post, going back and forth over this? Is it just so someone can say I was right if the truth is ever revealed?

It could be that some feel the need to know intimate things about stars'/celebrities' lives.

It's a valid question.

Gossip is one thing. If I didn't like gossip, I wouldn't be viewing a showbiz forum. But this whole thing of trying to prove X celeb is gay is something else and I find it weird and disturbing, frankly.

I kinda agree with you.

I was once answered quite rudely when I stated that a person's sexuality is only of relevance if a sexual encounter is planned.

Like you I find it all a bit tedious.

To be honest, I think you've chosen the absolute worst example there in Cowell. The man thrives on speculation, goes out of his way to be seen as one of the seven studly wonders of the world and the majority of speculation I've read on here about him is mainly taking the piss out of him and his funny little ubermacho heterosexual ways. When you try that hard to project an image, people are bound to ask why? So in his case, it's far less to do with the possibility of him being gay (no one would or should care), and everything to do with him being a self-promoting, attention-seeking tit who uses this type of speculation to keep himself and his projects in the news.

Otherwise though, I agree. Unless someone is actively hypocritical about their sexuality (eg. heavily promoting and gaining from one lifestyle to the detriment of another), then I really can't see why people would be interested or why it would make any difference as to how they see them.

I do see why people have picked Cowell for a target. You make good points (as always!), lexi. But it's just going on and on, and will continue to do so. There's never going to be a resolution to all the speculation so apart from pure mickey taking, I don't know how people aren't utterly bored of it all.

I don't know, I guess it's just idle entertainment. And since I get my idle entertainment pointing and laughing at Peter Andre, I'm not really in a position to take the higher ground!

I couldn't care less who someone is sleeping with. It is of no consequence to me at all.

But speculation about celebrities will never stop. It's part and parcel of the business I am afraid.

If Simon Cowell via his PR team finds the need to keep telling us of his sex life then it will be discussed on discussion forums, that's what they're they for. There are some posters on the closet thread who seem to think every male celebrity is hiding a gay secret, but most posters are a little bit more objective than that. You also have to remember that it is a Showbiz forum and therefore will attract people with an interest in celebrities, possibly more interest than the average person.

I also think a lot of the speculation and the interest in it comes from the fact that it is something that a lot of celebrities tend to hide - only to be outed/out themselves towards the end of their career.

I don't think anyone that would claim that there isn't a single A lister in Hollywood or someone achieving huge chart success atm that isn't gay, however can you tell me one that is in their 20's, out and proud? No, because in the music industry and in Hollywood it is still something that is encouraged to be kept under wraps.

Until attitudes change and young celebrities feel they can come out and it not have any effect on their fan base/being pigeonholed etc then speculation will remain.

Joe McElderry is openly gay. Though, admittedly it was covered up and first and he's the only person in that age group that I can think of.

But the speculation isn't helping anyone to come out, if the chose to. The possible gayness is used against these celebrities, ridiculed etc. Whatever we think about some celebrity, they should be given the freedom to come or not come out when they want to, but the "He is sooooo gay, ha ha ha" attitude isn't encouraging at all.

I think cowel has seen how speculation about sexy stars sex lives makes them more alluring, and wants a piece of it. However he forgot to factor in (ha see what I did there) that you might actually want to sleep with those hot people with ambiguous sexualities, even though deep down you know you never will. I really don't want to hear about Simon cowels sex life from any angle, he isn't a sexual being to me.

Exactly. Their didn't need to be any details about his "conquests". Some people were obviously expecting a quality biography from a respected author not a tacky low rent piece of journalism. Most people would probably think him straight anyway if it wasn't for Max Clifford-- not that it matters

why are most people obsessed by sexuality? Overrated and often undermining our humanity.

For some reason with some people it matters.

I had someone i've know a long time (It quite surprised me) tell me she wasn't going to watch the U.S show White Collar anymore because the star Matt Bomer is gay & "That ruins the fantasy" (whatever the hell that means) the character is straight so that fantasy can carry on & like i told her: It's not like she had a huge chance to begin with

it seems to be very true as there is so many threads on here on who is gay but is hiding it
It doesn't interest me probably because i think that Simon Cowell and the others that people seem to somehow think that they are stuck in the closet are actually straight-it never occurs to me that they are gay-maybe my gaydar doesn't work

Well her reaction is not that surprising. Imagine Harry Styles came out... the tweens would go insane. A million broken hearts and a huge backlash (partly why any boyband member only come out when their fame has dwindled).

The gay thread on here.. well it looks like its a thread based on fantasy by members hoping such and such is gay, People like to fantasise about celebs they fancy and that triggers gossip/speculation.
