BT Voyager DMP or Similar Device

Hi Everyone,

I'm after something that can stream MP3s from my home PC and play them in the kitchen. I've already got a Wireless Squeezebox in the front room which is fantastic but I'm after something a little cheaper (£150 max) with integrated speakers.

I'm thinking of getting a BT Voyager DMP (these sell for £99 on the BT website) . From looking at the description, it seems to use it's own method of 'wirelessness', i.e you plug a usb thing into the back of your home PC which then transmits the audio to a set of speakers.

Has anyone here used one ? If so, what is the audio quality, range and ease of use like ?

Alternatively, if anyone can recomend me a squeezebox like device with built in speakers for £150 ish ( I know, I don't want much !!) then I'd be grateful !

Cheers,

Peter.

Hi
I purchased a BT Voyager DMP from the BT website for £99. You can actually buy them now for about £80 (I cannot remember what the site was but just do a search on google).
They are available from telecoms2order.com for £88

SO far I am pretty impressed with the device. SOund quality is pretty good. The only slight problem I have had is with the volume. I like the sound to be very loud but the top volume level wasn't as loud as I would have liked. The software for playing your MP3s is also pretty basic with no bells or whistles. It looks like it could do with a major development and re-write to bring it in line with WinAmp or Musicmatch. EIther that or somehow interface with one (or both) of these major MP3 software players/librarys. I tried emailing the BT team about this but their reply was very vague.

You are in luck if you use Windows Media Player. There is an independant company that has written software that allows playlists created in WMP to be imported into the BT Voyager DMP SOftware.

When using the proprietry software you can remotely control the playing of the MP3s on the remote computer (e.g. pause, play, FF, REW, NEXT, PREV etc) from the DMP player, which is pretty useful.

All in all it is a good device that is well worth the money.

The device also plays Internet Radio and has a built in FM radio.

Cheers Dobbin321.

I might just get one - for £80 you can't really go wrong !!

Just one more question, what's the range like ?

I cannot say that I have tested it to any great degree but I have never had any problems. Our house is only 5 year old and detached. The walls therefore are pretty thin. I have had it outside in the garden and it was okay.
That reminds me one other thing that I thought was poor. The batteries it uses are 8 x C size! I couldn't believe that something with no moving parts needed eight batteries. What's that all about? If it had even been 8 x AA batteries that would have been ok coz rechargeables in this size are plentiful and cheap! But rechargeable C size batteries are pretty expensive in comparison.
Remember that the distance selling regulations give you a chance to reject the item if it doesn't meet your requirements and you bought it by mail order. You must send it back in the same condition it arrived and within a reasonable time (10 days I think?). You can therefore try and test it without risk.
Hope this has been some help.
