Coughing Cocker!

Just wondered if anyone else had the same problem, not necessarily with the same breed.

We have had our rescue cocker for over a year now and from the start she has always coughed and gagged following a drink of water from her bowl. It has never happened after she eats solid pet food or a snack. She was fully vaccinated when we got her (kennel cough etc) and was spayed in October 2011 when they had a look in her throat when she was intubated but could not find anything as we mentioned this cough to them before the operation.

Fast forward a few months and she is coughing now even when she is not drinking. She will cough when she jumps up in excitement, or if she leans her head sideways to scratch herself or just for no reason at all. We are taking her to the vets on Monday for her booster injections and they are going to do a health check but when I mentioned to the lady about the cough she said just to put the water bowl higher up for her but we have done that, to no avail. Obviously the vet will check her out but she has not lost weight, not bleeding from anywhere suspicious and seems her usual self but this cough sounds awful.

Thanks Bunny55. I have not seen that particular website and there were some interesting replies there.

Sorry for my hurried response yesterday. Seems like a cough, could be caused by so many reasons.

Is she insured? Have you had blood tests and an x-ray

We have two cockers. One suffers from a collapsing trachea. It's not too bad at the moment but he coughs after drinking and when going up hills or gets too excited. There are treatments but it mostly involves surgery and our dog is too old.

Our dog has always reverse sneezed after eating / drinking, running to much.

To cut a very long story short, last year we had her in the vets several times after fainting and what we thought were seizures. Turns out she has an enlarged heart, twice it's proper size, and a grade 4/5 heart murmer.

She's on meds now and is ok ish. I recently read though, that reverse sneezing is caused bu a collapsing trachea and episodes can cause the heart to overwork to compensate for the lack of oxygen, thus causing it to grow. So, I wish we'd taken Ren in sooner. However, they may well not be linked. But, take your dog in.

Thanks for your informative replies. After doing lots of research over the past few days before we take her to the vets tomorrow I think it could well be a collapsing trachea. We know nothing of her history because of course she is a rescue dog. Fortunately we have got her insured so treatment would be possible. Poor love.

Oh my God, my pup coughs after drinking and I never thought anything of it. Thanks for this thread, I am going to keep a close eye on this and a vet visit if it doesn't clear up soon.
