Spotted the killer in the first 20 or so minutes. Very disappointing and painfully slow episode. Hopefully it'll improve when our Ken is back in Sweden. I still prefer the Swedish originals - Rolf Lassgård slightly preferred over Krister Henriksson!

I did, well I recorded it and skipped through a lot of the navel contemplation. Can't say that I'll bother next week.

Yes, there was a lot of atmosphere (some great telephotography) but not much in the way of plot.

Oh well.

Yes, and enjoyed it again.

I understand the criticisms, but enjoy it nonetheless.

Episode 1 was bad, episode 2 was terrible.. epic fail. Wallender really is a bit of a cock too.. how could he pick up a hitch hiker and not even realise it's the girl he's been looking for.. and why does he keep going to dangerous places alone.. 'Vera' style.

It was ok, seemed painfully slow for what was a fairly uncomplicated case though. Was there any point in the excruciating visit to his in-laws for the birthday party, and the story about a Russian submarine ? I didn't envy him his visit to the piano recital either, but I guess it's one of those things you do for love. Poor old Wallander does put himself though it.

Looks like the submarine issue will be covered in the next episode.

I actually preferred the way they filmed his deteriorating mental health compared with the Krister Wallander. Branagh's acting was less exaggerated and they relied less on film tricks to imply the decline. It's a pleasure to see top acting even when the story is a bit one dimensional.

The sound design and direction was really good but as always with the Branagh Wallander the focus is always so strongly on the main character that it can feel too much.

I think he knew it was the girl, he just didn't want to panic her. I agree about him going places alone, it happens all too often in police dramas. Even just two of them going to the bikers place to carry out a search seemed a bit ridiculous. A dozen or more aggressive bikers, a sizeable property with outhouses etc. They certainly got lucky finding the knife.

I don't think he knew the girl was Hannah til she escaped at the petrol station. As they were driving you could see he was lost in his own thoughts rather than trying to pretend he didn't know it was her. It was just meant to further the idea to the viewer that Kurt is becoming increasingly incapable about his job. No idea what suddenly triggered the realisation that the girl was Hannah though - guess merely the fact that she'd run away from the car i.e. why would she do that if she wants a lift?

I quite enjoyed this even though I also like the two Swedish versions. Not much plot (similar to Hinterland there) but I appreciate the setting and atmosphere.

I think he was in a bit of a daze when he picked Hannah up. He'd just been told his doctor wanted to see him again about his blood results - which worried him. His mind clicked back when they were at the petrol station.

Did Wallander ever find out which bikers beat him up?

Same here. I've also grown to like Kenneth Branagh as Wallander

I watched the second episode on the iplayer when I got in bed last night!..... it's the first time I have seen the programme and!...... it's probably the last time as well.....I found it very slow and dull!.... Whether I was dropping off to sleep at times or not!, I am not sure but I couldn't work out why he was at that party!, I hadn't heard any mention of it before him just turning up!..... I didn't know who those people were?...... And him keep going off into those dazes well!....... I just couldn't be bothered with!... surely a normal person, and working for the police!.. someone would notice there was something wrong with him!.......

No it's not for me!......

The party was mentioned before a couple of times. It was his son-in-law's father and mother. But there doesn't appear to be much love lost between Wallander and his in-laws, their conversation seemed pretty stilted and awkward.
That's why I asked about the story of the Russian submarine, I wondered if it was a metaphor for something else. But another poster (above) has kindly pointed out that it becomes relevant later. I've never read the Wallander books, but son-in-law's father looks a wrong-un to me.

He was Major Reinhardt in Secret Army!

Isn't he a high ranking naval officer in Wallender?

There were characters named Stefan and Pontus in this episode, so I am hoping for an Isabelle in next week's.

My mind was going the same way as Kurt's after trying to stay with that for an hour and a half.

Tried catching up with the first episode last night. It was unwatchable. A slow dirge. What a disappointment.

I think that's often the problem when adapting books to the screen. What can be fascinating reading..thought processes, intimate feelings, ruminations and memories etc, become dull when they attempt to transfer it to screen. It usually results in a lot of long, silent staring into the middle distance. Something viewers have become very accustomed to recently.

Just watching the 3rd episode.. totally dull once again. No wonder there's not a single comment about it on DS.

Surely Kenneth must have known when he filmed it that this was going to bomb

Agreed, absolutely dreadful, thank goodness that's the end of it.

I though KB played the part really well. Shame the story was a bit incoherent.

To be honest, I am glad it is all over. Although, KB played the part reasonably well, to me there is only one Kurt Wallander and that is Krister Henriksson.

Hopefully this BBC series won't be returning. I thought it was dire. No redeeming content.

Redundant comment on a show which has now ended as has been mentioned since the start of this thread!
