Tonight's episode, Before the Frost is based on the same book which also inspired the first episode of the Krister Wallander

They make Sweden look such a dark damp depressing place, not a very good advert for Swedish tourism.

I think they make it look pretty.

The scenery is a projection of the lead character's mindset, it wouldn't really make sense for it to be set in sunny, happy land.

Are you kidding? It's beautiful! Bleak and stark, yes, but beautiful all the same.

Nice to see Kurt and his daughter together and getting on well.

I hope there's another series of this. Very far fetched stories, and quite grim, but worth watching.

Nah, makes Sweden look a shithole. Good series though, Branagh top class in the role.

Yet another BBC drama with evil Christians in it, not had one of those for a few months.

This series has been disappointing overall I think, good acting from Ken, but everything else is flat, he drains the life out of the programme.

Goodness, I thought that was so beautifully and intelligently photographed tonight. Some really gorgeous camera work. The composition resembled a Turner at times.

A(nother) series looking as much at international sales as anything else but Branagh makes the journey worthwhile. As always, an outstanding performance.

The circle of life eh, whoduthunkit.

The story was written by a Swedish author ten years ago.

A shithole with bleak but beautiful countryside? Well I never. I think some of the shots look like paintings.

Does anyone know what the song on the end credits is?

I agree. The scenery is so beautifully filmed, and adds so much to the atmosphere.

The interiors are also striking - reminds me of Wyeth paintings.

I did notice, though, Swedish people when they have visits from old friends never do as we do and say "Sit down, have a cuppa tea, do you want a biscuit?" They just stand around looking glum.

Or maybe that's just Kurt and his mates.

I know, he's leftist activist hence the story line, fits in well with the rest of the BBC's drama output though.

Some very striking images tonight, what with the burning swans and the burning church.

It's been a good series, albeit short.

You want to know everything that happened after that? Okay, I'll put it in spoiler tags:

Spoiler
I'm guessing the rabbit was in the animal testing lab. The whole thing was a cult. Each member (they got through four of them) burned themselves to death, recording a video message beforehand saying that they were doing this to atone for their sins, in the name of the man "who died and who rose again". This refers to Eric Westen, Anna's father who was thought to be deceased. Eric kidnapped his family and was about to set them alight for Anna's sins (she had had an abortion) when Wally burst in and saved the day.

Thanks, xanax.

Actually sounds kinda lame. I love Mankell's books but I don't think Wallander makes good TV. None of the versions I've seen anyway.

And Branagh just makes me want to throttle him, miserable sod. Actually fell asleep in front of it last week....

He was actually a bit more cheery than normal at the end of this episode, as he is reconciled with his daughter and she is going to make him a granddaddy, which he is chuffed about.

I must admit, I like his miserableness. I have a weakness for angst-ridden men (on screen, that is)

Is it just me or was he sniffing round that Ann-Britt character? Is he meant to have some thing for her?

I thought it was just guilt with Ann-Brit, as it was his fault really that she got injured.

It was a bit of an odd speech she made to him, though, about how he didn't need to keep visiting her, basically saying "get lost". Maybe he does have a thing for her and she was brushing him off.
