Does anyone else find it odd the way they all speak in this series. Its like that all speak in "sotto voce" all the time. Does no one talk normally in Sweden?

That was my thought as well. Deffo sounded like a brush-off. Also, when he leaves he has to tack on the whole "hope your husband and kids are well", just to show that he wasn't sniffing.

Surely it was that Kurt was feeling guilty since he knew he was the reason that she was in that situation (by breaking into the yard). And more to the point, that she knew it too and didn't want him coming visiting purely for reasons of guilt...and wasn't going to let him assuage his guilty conscience by visiting either.

Hope this series is better than the last which was dire.

He looks well. He's lost a lot of weight.

I like Kenny B's Wallander, but this particular story is not captivating me at all.

Me neither. It's quite boring and preachy. Lot's of long pauses of people contemplating their navels.

Prefer the Swedish Wallander.

I just lost interest. Weak supporting cast, everyone appeared to be as bored as I was and just going through the motions. Never thought I'd say it, but I preferred Hinterland.

That's a relief. Not just me then?

Hinterland was slow, but this was even slower.

I noticed the BBC announcer introduced it as the new "season" instead of "series". 3 episodes does not make a season, surely?

Did not like this at all. Difficult to make out some of the dialogue. Found it hard to follow the storyline. Will give the future episodes a miss.

According to someone I know this story was the author's favourite.
Well maybe the book was good and the Swedish TV version good (not seen it) but this TV version is just too tedious.

Why does this UK-made version insist on pronouncing the lead character's name as WOllander, when it should be (and is in the original Swedish version) vallANder?

Because the BBC thinks of the viewing public as too stupid to get their heads around a pronunciation that differs from the spelling. For a while they even toyed with the idea of putting "Police" on the vehicles because they were unsure that "Polis" would be understood by those watching. Again, W1A is a documentary....

It'll be over and done for good soon. Should never have been made in the first place.

I lost the plot when KB went unaccompanied into the township, then into the bar, and then started sniffing around.

As if...

I KNOW we need plot devices to move it along, and we all realise that a certain amount of artistic licence is needed, but that was just too implausible for me.

At least next week, he's back in Ystad, so will give that one a try

One word now for my opinion of series I've never seen before and this word applies to the plot and the acting, particularly by KB.

"Pathetic"

I have never seen the Swedish version. Is the Swedish Wallander always so wet like Branagh? How the hell did he get a job on the police force.

BBC 4 has shown both the series, with Rolf Lassgard as Kurt, which was based on Henning Mankel's books, and the series starring Krister Henriksson which, apart from the first episode, was based on plot ideas by Henning Mankel.

The White Lioness with Rolf Lassgard was only partly based in South Africa and centred around an assassination plot in, if memory serves me correctly, Oslo.

Neither of the Swedish Wallanders were 'wet'.

Seems I'm alone in saying I quite enjoyed this first episode. I think KB is brilliant in the role and I thought the SA township settings were very evocative, having visited Soweto myself in the 90s it was interesting to see how things have changed since then - or not, shockingly.

I liked the subtle touches that reminded me of Wallander's fragile mental health - like his feeling "isolated in a crowd" scene during the conference break. I know how that feels and I thought it was portrayed really well. Also his obvious pleasure at being included in the family party, where he felt most comfortable. All subtle but telling and makes the character 3-dimensional. Great stuff, for me at least.

A bit dull.
Not sure of some of the plot lines (although I may have been bored).
How did he find the operative's car and was it the only car in SA with dust on the hubs?
What was there to connect the politician to the attempted killing?
