I'm surprised Duane is out. He seemed like a real contender and it seems many people thought that.There is an ice little article on the home page of yahoo about how the apprentice system is flawed and good candidates leave early. Think you answered your own question yourself, the idea of this task was to make money, well the order they got was worth £17:50 per club per month for 3 months, which means each club generated a revenue of £52:50, but each club needed the equipment for the class, lets say we use the figures the pm plucked out of thin air, each club would have been provided with 30 x space hoppers @ £2 each(£60), 30 x hula hoops @ £1 each(£30), and 30 x skipping ropes @ £0.50 each(£15), meaning it would cost £105 to kit each club out, and as being as each club would only be making £52:50 each that means each club would be making a £52:50 loss before it even started, maybe ok in your eyes as a concept but ultimetly this was about making money, what was the pm thinking about?, and it was his field as well

Plus the fact that some of the equipment would need replacing, broken or missing each month.

I don't agree. The deal that they offered Virgin in negotiation was a license for £45 per month (or something like that) which would include the initial provision of the equipment (they never said they would have an ongoing obligation to repair/replace). This is a common business technique eg landlords who offer contributions to tenant fitouts to persuade them to take on a lease.

On the figures you have quoted that would have been £45 of income per club in the 1st month less £105 for equipment. Thereafter, it would have been pure income so by the end of a 3 month trial period it would have been at £30 profit per club plus, assuming the trial was successful, £45 per month per club thereafter as pure profit. This sounds like quite a nice little earner to me.

That wasn't, however, the deal that was agreed. The deal that they were given was a monthly license fee of £17.50 per club. As it was expressed in the boardroom, it wasn't £17.50 per club on condition that they supplied all the equipment, it was just £17.50 per club. The fact that the equipment was offered as part of the original proposal is irrelevent, that offer was rejected and hence is extinguished.

So, by the end of month 3, they are at £52.50 profit per club.
