My phone won't work, neither will my computer?
Both my broadband and phone aren't wworking. I've been having problems with my broadband the last few days - it seems to take longer to load having previously been almost instantaneous. Trouble is it's a Toshiba c660 which doesn't link to wifi, hence I am dragging a 3 metere ethernet cable everywhere.
I think I am damaging the socket where the ethernet cable goes as sometimes if I fiddled the cable about it would load. I bought a new cable and the same thing happened so it isn't the cable at fault. Then since last night it doesn't load at all, what's more the phone itself no longer has a tone and cannot make or receive calls. I think the router socket has been damaged by the pulling around as the cable doesn't fit in well. Would this also disrupt the phone service? I'm with talktalk and have e-mailed them my mobile number but would like others' opinions or experiences in the meantime. |

Plug a known working phone directly into the "test" socket in the Master Socket (Linebox) - do you get a dial tone?
If so, the problem is yours and we can advise further; if not the problem is the supplier's. You may also wish to consider asking for this thread to be moved to the appropriate technical area of DS. This describes the 'Linebox' test http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/d...ine-box-socket Last edited by Cruachan : 19-04-2012 at 16:35. Reason: Qualified that known working phone needed + link |

you can get a usb wifi dongle for a few quid. must be better than having to work directly from a phone socket. even if you don;t do that, just get an extension socket/plug then connect to that, rather than directly into the phone socket.

I don't think I have a mastrer socket it's an old 80s one.
Also, why can't you connect to wifi with your tosh 660? |

If you plug a known working phone directly into it, with all extensions etc unplugged, what do you get? |

We are with talk-talk and a few weeks ago we had an issue like this. It happened on four occasions over a period of a week - no active line and couldn't do anything.
Longest period was twelve hours shortest was around two. Since then, the line has been perfect and no issues at all. Couldn't get talk-talk on the phone to speak to them at the time so don't know what the problem was. As it cleared up itself we assumed ( rightly or wrongly) that they could have been doing some work on the lines. |

No expert here, but we lost our internet, dialing tone on phone and access to Anytime on Sky a short while back. After trying a few things which didn't help, my OH changed the broadband filter box (which plugs into phone line, then router plugs into that). We haven't had a problem since, it was instantly all back on.

Had similar problem for a week handily over Xmas period, turns out there was some frazzled part at the exchange (not very techincal I know!). Once the fault was logged calls were diverted to a mobile.

PLEASE HELP TALK TALK ARE MAKING ME GET OUT AN ENGINEER YET AGAIN! They're useless!
To clarify, the cordless phone I normally use has no tone and can't make or recieve calls. This started happening at the same time the brioadband stopped working. The corded phone I use in emergencies still works from the same socket however. I was sent a new router but sadly it still won't work so don't know what the hell is wrong. I have been having problems with not being able to connect to wifi for months, but that is the fault of the stupid toshiba c660 - seems to be common when I google it./ |

I have been having problems with not being able to connect to wifi for months, but that is the fault of the stupid toshiba c660 - seems to be common when I google it./ If a corded phone works then your line is not faulty as far as the voice (phone) part of it is concerned. So there is another reason why your cordless phones do not work. If there was a line fault the corded phone would not work either. When you tested the corded phone did you plug it directly into the socket or use the same filter as you are using with the cordless phone? If you did not use the filter then test it again with the filter. And with the router unplugged. If you don't get dial tone with a filter but do without then the filter is faulty and should be replaced. If you get dial tone on the filter plug the router back in, with the corded phone still connected. If the dial tone stops then you may have a dodgy router. If the dial tone is still OK then unplug the corded phone and plug in the cordless phone. If the cordless phone does not get dial tone then the phone is faulty. So having sorted the phone side out now you can turn to the broadband. Do you have any extensions? Are any of them in use? If so do they all have filters fitted? If you do have unfiltered extension phones then that can affect your broadband. But first off unplug all extension phones etc from the line and even the phone you use at the router socket. Does that restore broadband or not? When you swapped routers did you also swap the cable between the router and the phone socket? If not try a different cable. And also double check the cable is plugged into the right socket on the back of the router. The phone plug at the router end will plug into a LAN port but doing so will stop the phone line working as well. So make sure it is connected to the WAN or PHONE or LINE socket (however your router is labelled). You'll see the phone line socket is slightly smaller than the LAN ports. What do you mean by TalkTalk are making YOU get an engineer out? If you mean they are asking you to call BT then tell them that is their job. Even more so if you do not get any service from BT! In any case you cannot call BT Openreach who fix line faults anyway, they only deal with service providers, like TalkTalk. So it is TalkTalk who should be calling the engineer out not you. |
