any tips how to ripen it quicker. I've got one in the kitchen and am desperate to eat it but it feels too hard yet.

Put it in a brown paper bag with a banana

Put in in an airing cupboard if you have one.

Yep I do, so that's in a brown paper bag with a ripe banana and put in the airing cupboard. Thanks so much.

The worst offenders are the "perfectly ripe" ones. They start out perfectly unripe and never get any riper.

I would be very interested to know if it works. I have never bought a hard avocado which has then softened. It just stays hard no matter what I try (airing cupboard, banana).
I now will only buy them if they are soft enough to eat.

Agreed. It's like the "ripen at home" plums and things you can get. They stay hard as rocks for days, then go off in the space of 10 minutes.

Slightly unrelated...I can't stand avocados but yet I love guacamole (especially homemade). Think it's the texture of it when it hasn't been mushed up and assaulted with chilli and whatnot.

I love avocado on sandwiches. I spend a lot of time in New Zealand and their staple sandwich is chicken, avocado and salad sandwiches. You can get them everywhere and they are delicious. I think it helps that everything there is very fresh as it is the perfect growing climate all year round

The avocado was bought as ready to eat. I did as recommended with the banana in the bag etc, but it isn't soft yet. I always think fruit should ripen naturally, so perhaps this is another example. I'll keep my fingers crossed but might just have to go and buy a ripe one.

If I get the ones to ripen at home I put them in the fruit bowl with apples and they ripen in a few days. I find the so called "perfectly ripe" ones are often over ripe.

The avocado never ripened, it softened on the end a bit but I ditched it and won't buy another that isn't soft enough to eat. Thanks for your comments.

From picking to ripe an avocado takes 21 days. Just leave it in the kitchen in a bowl.
We have an avocado tree and pick them for when we want to eat them. (in Spain)

The bronze-ish, more wrinkly ones in a two-pack from Tesco's are best, they're lovely and soft and creamy but the smooth green ones tend to feel harder, so I don't buy them.
