Report: John Inverdale to host French Open tennis on ITV

Per link below.

I know we're increasingly moving into an era of presenters working for more than one channel. This has to a degree become more frequent due to BBC cuts - eg Clare Balding working for C4.

However Inverdale is an incredibly high profile presenter and assuming this report is correct it will arguably be the most high profile example so far.

Also: Mullins and Petchey to be commentators; Courier in studio.

Clare Balding, like as number of other presenters & reporters, is freelance so has always been free to work for other broadcasters

Presumably this is something to do with EU rulings on free movement of labour within the EU ?

eh? Its likely to be more due to having to pay large retainers to keep presenters working exclusively for one station - the old golden hancuff's deal. If you dont pay that, they can work where they choose.

Although Inverdale is a big BBC name - maybe he thinks he might get the 2015 RWC on ITV if he puts in a stint for them on the tennis now? It will be interesting to see if he can handle the demands on commercial sports live broadcasting - the ability to be interesting & spontaneous while having to think about the countdown to the next break. As we saw with Des Lynam he couldnt handle that, even though he was a mainstay of live sport for the BBC.

Of course not, he's freelance, the BBC can still choose not to use him again.

They will need Annabel Croft to assist with the tennis jargon. As well as to keep up interest.

He used to work for BSB's sport channel and Sky Sports.

I bet Steve Rider is a bit disappointed not to get this role ( if of course it is confirmed). Didnt he do Wimbledon for quite a few years?

You assume Steve Rider wanted to do it?

Well in the 90's Des did Wimbledon mainly with Sue Barker, then Sue Barker did it solo when he left, he may have done it the odd year though.

Rider hosted Wimbledon in 1998 when Des was doing World Cup 98.

He's doing some work on Sky for their F1 channel. Not sure if that precludes him for working for another station.

Still does BTCC for ITV4 on Sundays. Maybe as RadioKnower said he has enough on his plate already.

Obviously Matt Smith's diary is pretty full too and Craig Doyle is only used for the rugby now so maybe ITV sport feel they need another presenter (at least part time)

Craig will be presenting the TT which overlaps with the French Open.

As long as we're not missing any live action, so what? Better an ad or two between every couple of games than it's not on FTA, or UK tv at all.

Both singles finals and two additional matches on ITV1, and up to six hours of live coverage per day on ITV4

It will end up being more than that.
