Jersey Royal potatoes...
i used to look forward to jersey's coming into season but last year and again this season they appear tasteless to me.
remember boiled jersey's with salt and a knob of butter? used to be lovely. i think i'll give them a miss from now on,what has happened to the jersey royal? |

Theyv'e just come into my local farm shop at £4.00 a pound. I'll be giving them an extremely wide berth! I do love them, but at that price they can bugger off.

I agree I used to look forward to them & didn't mind payng extra for the treat but now I stay clear as they are tasteless. My hubby brought me some new potatoes home a while ago, they were from Tesco & in a sealed paper bag, they were gorgeous & when you cut in to them they were a yellow buttery colour & tasted buttery too. Wish I could remember the name of them.

They do a tiny bag in Morrisons for £3. I almost fell off my seat when they came through my checkout, they didn't even look nice.

I used to think they were worth the premium price at one time but for a few years now they don't taste much different to other varieties.
I think they used to grow them on fields next to sea, fertilised by swathes of seaweed. As they seem to export a million tons of them nowadays maybe there isn't enough seaweed to go round and they use cow poop instead? |

I bought a few today from a local 'better class'
supermarket we have in the North-West called Booths. I'd read in their free magazine that their buyer goes and inspects where they are grown every year to guarantee quality. Hmmm.Well I steamed a small quantity earlier to eat with some fried dab. They were very nice, though maybe not quite as distinctive as I remember. Perhaps it makes a difference if you get the better ones from the sea slope fields strewn with seaweed like these ones. As a comparison I also boiled a single Cyprus potato. That was very nearly as nice and at £1.99/kilo against £3.99/kilo rather better value. ![]() In the end I covered all the potatoes with mint sauce but still the quality of both potatoes refused to be dominated - much better than little Charlottes or similar. |

M&S have got them, but they too are somewhere in the region of £4 a pound. They'll drop and will have offers at some point but for now at that price, I can do without.
Marks do a nice spud called Chopin. Not sure if that's just an M&S name however. They're naturally firm and buttery tasting, similar to those mentioned in other posts. In total agreement about how nice good Jersey royals are - tons of mint and plenty of butter, marvellous. |

The EU stopped Jersey farmers using the seaweed as a fertiliser and they now have to use something else so the taste wont be the same!
Sad really my favourite potato

EU protection for Jersey Royal, grown with seaweed = true.
EU ban on seaweed = myth; sorry! |

I'd recommend Sainsbury's Vivaldi potatoes, which also have a rich buttery flavour. They sell large ones in pre-packed baking potato trays (£1 I think) and the smaller ones in a kg bag. I love the baking potatoes!

They were almost jizzing over jersey royals on Saturday Kitchen a few weeks back. Either it is one of those cheffy fads that they do just because it is the thing to do or they are still pretty good if you get them from the right place.
They did mention the seaweed also. |

Dunno if this is true but a friend of mine's father was a greengrocer.
Had several shops in the Middlesboro' area. He says that the original variety that were Jersey Royals had some hideous disease in the 70s. Eventually they had to replace them with another but it was not acknowledged to the public. Guess it would make sense cos there is now way they taste like they did. But I have looked on google for evidence of this and can find none. So who knows. |
