Yes, it is the future. They will make tons of money because music fans would probably prefer to watch a hologram of a dead star, than many living modern stars.

I can't honestly understand why anybody would be excited or actually need to see a hologram of any dead artist at a gig.

It's a disturbing development. It's basically saying that someone else has the right to a dead person's character.

Imagine a Gary Barlow concert where he gets George Harrison to join him for a duet on "Here Comes The Sun"...

My guess is they recorded an actor recreating a performance of 2pac..and then they put CGI over the top of him so it looked like pac..like how they turned turned andy serkis into golem in lotr...recorded it and edited the vocal and then displayed it on stage holographically.

you can see his face looks abit computerised..and his abs have never looked so perfect.”

No that doesn't explain how a hologram works at all.
It wasn't a hologram.

As with most of these stage effects they are usually the update of Pepper's Ghost.
It has been done quite a few times already ever since The Gorllaz used it.

I don't even know if there ever has been a real hologram used for these types of sage show 3D effects.

Why is almost everyone calling these holograms?

They're not holograms at all.
