The user/passwords your using have to also be present on the Ubuntu machine. Only other alternative is to give everyone access to the share.
There is also a tickbox option under the folder view settings part of Windows (not sure about Linux) to enable or disable "Simple File Sharing"/"Sharing Wizard". If you disable this then the shares are authenticated per account, otherwise with it enabled it will try as a guest user. To make things more awkward, MS decided not to put this tickbox in home versions of Windows but there is probably a workaround. |

I have been using all windows machines on all 3 of my computers.
My file server used to be win 7 and each user had to use their own user/pass to access their docs/pics/music in their user folder under \\desktop\userdocs\usernamehere. only user1 could access \\desktop\userdoc\user1 and user2 could access their own folder. if they tried to access another folder it would come up as permission denied. however at the moment ive only got my account working whereas all the other account i click on \\desktop and nothing happens just permission denied error. edit: i created all these samba users using my own account in ubuntu going to try and create each user using their own ubuntu account. |

ive found out the problem.
the drive which the actual shares are on isn't being mounted whichever user account on ubuntu i use to mount the drive can access the shares from win 7 pc's but as soon as i log out the drive is unmounted and i can't access from win 7. only one user at a time is allowed to mount the drive if i try mounting using a second user i just get a permission error or a device busy error? |

oops haven't update my user info in a while. Am using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10 only atm lol.
Have sorted the problem out now. The Hard drive was being auto unmounted but not mounted when i was logging in and out. So when I logged out and logged into the other account the drive was unmounted hence they windows pc's couldn't access the shares. All sorted now. Thanks for your help guys. |
