Is there a quick method of deleting a lot of recorded programmes quickly - or if necessary all recorded programmes please

All? Reformat the disk.

Several? If they are all in the same folder then go into File Manager, open the folder, select all, delete. If they are spread across several folders then move them all to one folder first (or all to the top level). The moves are done instantaneously. The deletes will take time so best to leave it to get on with it while you do something else (which could be watching another recording if you wish and don't mind having the waste basket on display while doing so).

Set em up as Gomezz says. You can select a folder in File Manager (you don't have to open it and select the contents).

Do it just before going to bed, after actioning the deletes press the off button. The pvr will go into sby when it's finished working.

Presumably that deletes the folder too? Which may or may not be what is wanted (for example I have two folders called FILMS and SAVED which I do not want to delete even if I empty them).

Indeed but by far the majority of anyone wanting to empty a folder it will be the contents of a series recording reservation.

In this case selecting all it's contents and deleting them will also delete the folder (unless of course you turn the action off).

Opening the folder and selecting all it's contents restricts multiple selection to the contents of a single folder afaik.

Using the wen interface may allow a more flexible selection capability of multiple recordings, not played with it enough yet to find out

Install Raydons media server bundle. I delete bulk files and folders via FTP, much easier, and you don;t have to wait 20 minutes between deleting separate files\folders.
