Post DSO stage 2 problems with SONY RDR-HXD890
this m/c worked perfectly up until the stage 2 switchover.
a full retune at stage 1 was uneventful with all channels present and a fully populated digital guide epg(NOT guide +) with working recording facility. come stage 2 and a full rescan was performed which again resulted in all channels present and a fully populated epg. now comes the problem. as i wasn't going to watch anything i put the m/c into standby. on friday i power on to check the previous night's recordings(on more 4) only to find they recorded but black screens. i then started checking other things. the epg had all the channels listed but apart from the BBC TV and Radio channels(and about 11 other random channels) the programme listings were missing. i then ran through each channel sequencially and only got pics and/or sound on the BBC channels(with banners on a couple of upcoming channels). i then went into the installation menu to do a signal check and this returned approx 96% signal strength and 100% signal quality on channels 22,23,25,26 and 28. the firmware is the latest version (1.24) updated for the m/c and the software is also the latest. to prove that it wasn't a one off, i did another full rescan with all channels and epg info present before putting the m/c into standby. left it for a couple of minutes and exactly the same missing channels and epg info resulted. i phoned sony and had a difficult conversation with a heavily accented asian gent who having confirmed that i had done everything correctly and had the correct firmware and software admitted they had several other callers with similar problem. his "script" insisted that it is the aerial that is the problem and i should get it fixed. here i have an issue. if i can get all the channels with perfect pictures and a complete epg that will allow me to timer record if i don't switch the m/c to standby, how can the aerial be at fault? the pictures are perfect and the signal is good. will sony be willing to pay for the call out charge for the aerial guy to check the thing just to tell me there's nothing wrong(bearing in mind i've been using freeview on my sony tv and this recorder without issue since i bought it)? my thoughts are that for some reason the m/c is not retaining the new info(backed up by the fact that before doing the rescans it says 135 existing channels and 114 found post rescan which, when i start up again after putting it in standby and prepare for the inevitable rescan again says 135(not 114) existing....WHY???? sorry for the long post but SONY's diagnosis and my logic are at odds here. anyone got any thoughts on possible solutions? did anyone experience anything similar with this model in earlier area switchovers? any help would be appreciated |

Not really much help - but we have had BIG problems with these recorders after DSO - but only in specific localised areas.
You might try doing a rescan with the aerial unplugged (so it wipes everything), then do a manual tune on the channels you listed above - see how that goes. |

OP are you on the Crystal Palace transmitter, because I am and I can report that my Sony recorder works fine following the DSO 2 rescan. I don't believe there is a factory reset option on the unit but you could try the Easy Set-up option which is like a first install in the Initial Set-up heading under the System Menu. Also delete any existing timer recordings you have set-up before you do this. One other thought is to leave the machine in standby overnight once retuned to allow the OTA epg download to refresh before attempting any further recordings.

yes ,i'm on crystal palace. i tried the easy setup but had exactly the same results. leaving it in standby after the rescan is where the problem(ie seemingly forgetting what it's already been taught) is occurring. leave it on and it's fine but that obviously isn't the solution.

I found this on another site Quote:
Losing Channels in Standby: To resolve reset the unit to factory settings as follows. Turn on the unit (with no DVD disc inside), Hold STOP [ ] on the front panel, then press the POWER button on the panel. The unit will power down as normal, but will factory reset when next turned on.
Some sites also suggest removing the power at the wall for a few second whilst the unit is powered downed before turning on for the factory reset.

the firmware is the latest version (1.24)
http://www.sony-asia.com/support/dow...uct/rdr-hxd890 I haven't installed it here so don't know if there are side effects, but the model number is identical and the firmware version is in the right range, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't suitable for the UK model (can't remember if the UK model has an Australia option on it). |

Well, I have success and all I can say is don't believe Sony or the instructions they've given for the switchover procedure.
I eventually used the "Reset to factory settings" method: With unit on, press and hold "stop" then press "power off(standby)". Unit goes to standby. I followed this by unplugging at the wall also but this may not be absolutely necessary. Plugged it back in, pressed standby(no time showing just --:--), went into installation menu and used the easy setup. Checked firmware version correct (1.24 for uk) checked software version correct(115 when new out of the box but updated to 118) Checked all channels present and checked epg complete. Now for the moment of truth. Set a couple of timer recordings on the epg and switched to standby. After recordings had finished, powered on and bingo we still have all channels and a complete epg AND the recordings are successful. So, put it back to factory settings is apparently what you have to do to clear everything out because rescan isn't sufficient. Let's not forget that the SONY customer support guy was adamant that it was the aerial(how much would that have cost me because the guy was diagnosing the problem from a script and couldn't grasp my logic?). That guy can shove his aerial diagnosis where the sun don't shine. |

Sony support
Ive tried both phoning and emailing sony support asking how I can stop the sony RDR-HXD890 from going into standby every time it finishes recording anything. Needless to say the problem isn't resolved.
