Netflix, the video on demand subscription service, today launches on the Sony Entertainment Network. Sony devices, including Bravia TV, Blu-ray players as well the PS3 will all benefit from access to the service.

Excellent. I'm a lovefilm subscriber but Netflix seems to have a better selection and is only £1 a month dearer for streaming only. At their prices it's almost worth having both!

Just be aware that it's only available for 2012 devices.

Oh that is a disappointment (though perhaps a good excuse to look at a PS3 )

Am I imagining it... I thought that Netflix had been available on the PS3 for a while...

I've had it on PS3 for quite a while now and the streaming is absolutely flawless.....Not a massive selection of newer films as yet but it grows daily.

Any idea why that is?

Yep it's because their licensing conditions with studios to get content required them to use PlayReady DRM for the UK service which older Sony Bravia devices don't have the correct specs to run it.

Seems a bit of an odd move, and can their devices change so much in just one year?

Having recently bought a Sony tv and blu-ray player, I won't be changing them again for new Sony devices any time soon. I think I'll probably buy an external device if I choose to go down the Netflix route.

This ones totally out of Sonys hands as Netflix are only using PlayReady DRM for the UK which older devices cannot run due to limitations of processing power.
Edd Uzzell from Sony said they tried to negotiate with Netflix about back porting, but they wouldn't budge as they were getting pressure from studios to improve piracy protection.

Thanks for the info. Amazing how quickly these devices become obsolescent - I bought my Blu-ray player only 6 months ago.

I know how you feel, I was in the same position when I spent a small fortune on a Samsung LED Series 7 TV back in August 2009 which had @internetTV with exciting things to come as the US models had all sorts of video streaming widgets like Blockbuster, Amazon Video, CBS .
BBCiPlayer was on the horizon, then less than a year later they dropped the bombshell that only 2010 and beyond TVs would be supported
And now with my Sony Blu Ray player with Netflix
Well at least I can get Netflix on Wii.

Yes you are correct as at the moment the US has 2 streams to cater for its existing customers using older devices they originally signed up with before PlayReady DRM came along.
You can get it on a UK Bravia by using unblock-us and having a US Netflix account.

Just ordered a WD Live Media Streamer with Netflix app preloaded (apparently) so looking forward to having that on my home office TV! It comes wireless ready so no extra dongle to buy though I will probably stick it on the network cable for best.

My son with the PS3 is generally unhappy with the Sony services to date. He keeps moaning about it and is looking to go for the new XBox when it arrives.

Looks like another case of the British consumer being taken to the cleaners again!

That sucks. I've got a BDP-S370 and that would have been pretty nice to have that as well as LoveFilm and everything else.

Bad news for Netflix, good news for Lovefilm. Looks like Netflix is effectively put at a major disadvantage by Sony.

The reason it's on your PS3 is because it's a he'll of alot more powerfull that a TV or Blu Ray player.

You still can if you don't mind using unblock-us and signing up to a US Netflix account.

I don't mind using unblock-us but it's a bit of a faff to keep changing the IP each time - but then i'm probably just lazy
